I'm looking to add some of my soon-to-be-replaced rig's storage HDD's to my new rigs hot swappable trays (Hailstorm case with evga classified 3x sli mobo); never done that before.
Any particular trick to it or missteps to avoid? Hot swappable makes it sound like I can add'em or remove'em with no fuss. Too good to be true I suppose. I am assuming there is no way to keep the data intact and that once I add them the BIOS or OS will format and prepare the HDD for use. If, however, I can keep the data intact it certainly would be nice. |

hotswap is for swaping drives while the system is on. However its a big help when the pc is off.
I think classified supports it in ahci, but I'm not sure, you better check otherwise you can lose all your data if you pull a drive if the pc is on. Edited by DST4ME - 08 Jan 2010 at 4:24pm |

All x58 boards that I know of are AHCI. just hook up, or unhook any drive you want, whenever you want, just not you OS drive., |

Just a clarification since you were kind enough to respond.
Will I be able to take the storage drive out of my current computer and simply put it into one of the hot swappable trays of the new rig, boot up, and still have all my data intact on that drive; or, will it require an initial mounting process that will wipe the drive clean? |

if the source pc is off and you remove the HDD from it then put it in the new pc while its off, all your data should be there.
