Ok, so I've only had my Digital Storm PC for 3 months and I'm already craving an upgrade. I currently have 6 GB of Corsair Dominator RAM installed in 3 of the 6 memory slots available on my motherboard. I have an EVGA board and the sticks are installed in the "Black" memory slots, the other "Grey" slots are empty. Will I be OK to purchase another identical memory kit (Part number CMP6GX3M3A1600C7) and just install them into the "Grey" slots with no problems?
This seems like a silly question to me but I just wanted to be sure. Thanks for any and all replies. |

Not to berate, but do you actually use any application that could make use of the extra memory? As in, media editing software?
Because otherwise, you're not going to get any benefit from it. |

I'm aware that the performance gains will be minimal if at all.... I just wanted to help future proof this PC a little more, I have the extra RAM slots staring me in the face and I have some extra cash lying around after selling some old software. I also found the exact kit required on eBay for only $140 so its not super expensive right now. So can I just plug the new memory kit into the "Grey" slots and Badda' Bing I have 12 GB? |

I think what dragon is getting at is, unless your using an application that uses that much ram no need to take your ram higher...games and general everyday apps most of us use "unless like dragon said, serious video editing or something of that nature" doesnt take alot of ram, 6gigs is just fine...your going to be spending your money for nothing, its just plain silly...and future proff? by the time games use that much ram your computer will be label'd as an antique lol /facepalm

There will be zero performance gains unless you can make use of it with ridiculous amounts of multitasking or special media editing apps that can tap into it. Any extra not being used is just going to sit there like a lump unused.
Installing it shouldn't be hard, though you may need to tweak a few simple BIOS settings. |

Thats a huge waste of money. first of all you can get much better deals for like $80 on newegg. second if you don't have a application that uses it its a waste and there will be no performance gain. if you want open task manager and go to performance and see how much ram you are using. third by the time your "future proofing" would pay off you will be on another socket which may require a differant channel memory like dual channel so you will be wasting 2 ram cards.
