Finally decided to pull the trigger and get a new rig. I'm a few years out of date when it comes to the hardware so any and all advice is appreciated! I also have no clue if there's any sort of hardware conflicts with what I've selected.
I'm on a semi-budget and $1800ish is my limit. Resolution will be 1900x1080 once I purchase a new monitor. This will be strictly a gaming rig hoping to play CoD:MW2, BF2:BC, WoW, and hopefully run Diablo 3 and Starcraft2 very well. I'm also hoping that this gives me enough room to easily upgrade in the future by replacing just a couple of pieces. I do plan on going SLI in the future, but not anytime soon. I'm assuming at that point I would need to upgrade to a 1000watt PS? I'd probably go with something from corsair, but for the time being I would stick with a 750watt unless somebody on here tells me its not enough.
![]() Any significant difference in ATI vs NVIDIA? I'm currently using an ATI card and have had no issues so I'd lean toward that personally. |

since your going to get a 1900x1080 i suggest getting a gtx 480 or a 5870. im not a computer expert but i hear taht the 480 is better than 5870 but it uses more power. im just relaying what i seen from forums to u so u dont have to wait that long for answers :P As for the psu it all depends on which gpu u use, if u are going to go duel 480 u would need a 1250 W psu and if u use 5870 i think it was a 1000 or a 1200 i forget lol

MR's build looks good as he said, for 1900 x 1200 you want to go with a 5870/480, to go sli with 480 you want the 1250w psu, for 5870 you will want 1000w corsair.

The 480 is a bit better, but it runs very hot and uses lot of power. If you're gonna have 2, know that your power bill w/2 480's gonna be serious difference from now. 5870 uses about 25-40% less power and cooler, too. Max diff in performance about 15%. |

Would you mind if we explore that? I understand the 480 could go as high as 500-600 watts power consumption in 2x SLI. 2x 5870's go about 290-360, so around 40% less is right. What I don't know is how long does a given card run close to full power consumption during a gaming session? Depends on the game, sure, but in one of the newer DX 11 games is it approaching that consumption most of the time? If so, if I was gaming with 2x 480's for 4 hrs in my area, it would cost me around $25 for the session! I hope you're gonna tell me that the cards only hit peak power every now and then, and we don't have to be concerned that much.
I have to tell you, it stresses me to see some of these guys insist on SLI or even CF, just because it's cool when they'll never see it on screen. If my example is near true, some folks are never gonna know what hit em. Say it ain't so, DST... justin... anybody.... Am I off my rocker?

I don't have either card so I can't tell you for a fact but I doubt you are hitting peak the whole time, also the 5870 has around 380w under load and for dual cf under load you are looking at about 560w, dual sli 480 is suppose to be around 700w.
again I don't have the cards so I have to go by what I read on reviews and the net. |
