Long story short, my robotics team happened to win a GTX 480 over the weekend...which is freakin awesome btw...but now that we have a killer graphics card to do some rendering on we're going to instead just build a new computer system centered around it in order to use it since the HP mini-towers at the school obviously won't work too nice with it. We can't sell the card for an equivalently powered and cooler running 570, unfortunately, so we definitely have to use the 480. Therefore....I'm looking right now for the cheapest possible configuration that'll work with the 480 without bottlenecks, can I get any suggestions?
Oh, and how do you think a Silverstone RV01 would work with it...I was planning to swap over to the RV03 sometime soon when it releases, and could put my RV01 to good use i guess. |

your school has better computers than mine. we have at the best core duos and worst pentium 1s i think. some computers don't have enough ram to run office 2010.
go with the i5 old 8xx socket i think 6gb ram and 750w psu edit: if you are going to be doing rendering on it consider the i7 8xx socket its not much more expensive and the extra threads will help with rendering since its cpu and gpu heavy. Edited by maxyme - 19 Mar 2011 at 10:30pm |

No SB? I was thinking of overclocking one of those, heh, btw for anyone that's overclocked a SB processor how easy is it? The people at my school (taking a course called A+ Comp. Maintenance) are extremely skeptical against overclocking but hey, if it isn't that risky i might convince them to let me at it heh.

hey i'm in high school! lol
as far as i know there isn't much risk just slowly bump up the vcore and the multiplier. i didn't choose sb because you can get great deals on the old socket. But thats just to get a pretty good deal. |

As you know I got 4 x 480 and under load with the LC they are warm, so either get lc on it or get a case like haf x with lot of air flow.

if you plan on oc and having it under load for long period of time, yes, LC just one, these guys are running warm, I got a triple 140mm rad with 6 push/pull and my load temps are anywhere from 50c to 70c depending on room temp.
as you can see load temps here are low, cpu and gpu are under full stress 99% +, they have been so for days now, which is the norm: ![]() Edited by DST4ME - 20 Mar 2011 at 2:31am |

lol if you put it close to the window, it will stop the cold air from coming in
, seriously tho, it does heat up the room about 10f.

Ah, no, i just meant a CPU overclock hehe. Don't see much of a need to overclock the GPU.
Any ideas on parts for the lowest costing, least bottlenecking system for it though? Case could be a RV01, and GPU again is of course mandated to be a GTX 480. |

When I had just one 480 in Lilim it would max out at 79°C at 79% fan speed. Having two in SLI they only max out at about 86°C at 86% fan speed and 81°C at 81% fan speed. You don't have to worry about LCing.
