    Posted: 05 Sep 2012 at 11:36am
Hey guys,

I'd like to upgrade my video card, I enjoy playing games on max settings and my current card does alright, but it seems to be pushing it in some games like skyrim and BF3, also I would really love to be able to fraps my gameplay with max settings and still keep my fps at least above 60. not sure how realistic that is.

What option would you guys suggest?

1. buy another gtx 570 superclocked and go SLI?
2. buy 1 gtx 670 (if I buy an updated card, is it possible to still use the 570 for a dedicated card on a second monitor?)
3. buy 1 gtx 680

Currently:

2600k i7
asus p8p67 deluxe
16 gb ram
WD 1tb Caviar black
evga geforce 570 superclocked 1280mb
coolermaster silent pro M 850 watt
1920x1080 (looking at buying benq xl2420tx)

Also if you have any other upgrade suggestions that arent overly expensive, im all ears. just looking to keep my PC up there in performance.

Thanks guys

It depends on what your qualifications are. I bought SLI 570's from DS 11 months ago and it still maxes BF3 and Skyrim, Metro 2033 (close enough). Also, I haven't had any new software thats really pushed the limits yet at 1920x1080.

So another GTX 570 would certainly serve you well. However, I doubt the cost effectiveness of choice 1.

A new 670 is going to be 400 but won't necessarily max BF3/skyrim high texture mods at 60fps. A 680 will without question, but it will run you 500. However, you may not even notice the difference between the 670 and the 680. Especially if you can sell your used 570 for around 100, I don't think it makes sense to do 1. So choose between 2 and 3.

So, all 3 choices will max your games, its just deciding on price point(250/400/500). The 670/680 can also potentially last longer.

Plus., if you add another 570 you have two near end of life cards and little upgrade potential. With a 670 with its 50% greater framerate you can always add another when needed and be way ahead of the game.    Sli 570 is still great gaming, just that the new cards offer more.    Good luck.

That's what I was leaning towards, I just wasnt sure how much of an upgrade a 670 or 680 would be over SLI 570's. I guess the newer cards will stay relevant longer.

Might just go for the 680 and call it a day, is there anything I could do with the 570? I'd prefer to make use of it somehow rather than sell it.

I thought I saw someone on youtube upgrade their machine to a 680 and then they used their old card to run a second monitor or something. Is that possible?

I'm not sure about two different cards, even if not sli.    I would think a driver conflict but ....... You can always save it as a backup for troubleshooting.

670. The 670 is a great buy and the difference between the 670 and 680 are very small. like 5 % change in frame rate. yet the 680 is much more expensive. I personally have the 670 and it eats everything pretty easily except the big beasts such as shogun2 but every system slows down when you have 10k units on the field :O

Hi Aka.      No worries with the gtx670, even in sli, with your Pcie 2.0 mobo.    The 3.0 designation for gtx670 just means it fully compliant if used with a 3.0 mobo like the z77 and use the Ivy Bridge chip like 3770.   There is no performance hit with 2.0 .     The gtx 670 will not saturate a 2.0 slot even at x8 lanes, which is sli., and certainly not with a single card at x16 pcie lanes.    Hope this helps.

I don't know a lot about the differences in performance between all of the different 670 versions and 680 versions.

If I were to upgrade to one of those cards which version of those cards are considered the best?  I see the 680 "Classified" is the most expensive but that doesnt neccessarily mean its the best.

Which versions of those two cards would you guys suggest?

Also, glad to hear my mobo is ok as is for now, I was wondering if I would have to upgrade that.

If it was my money, I would get the gtx670 FTW oc EVGA card.   It has the money savings of the 670, $130 cheaperthan 680, plus the better 680 circuit board and 680's better cooling.   Performance is within a few fps if not the same.     Plus you pocket $130.    Just me.

Thanks for the input.

quick question though, what is the difference between an FTW 2gb and a Superclocked 4gb for $50 more?

what is the performance difference between a card that says 2gb vs a card that says 4gb?

Overclocking a video card from benchs I've seen gives a couple of fps better in some games.    The 2gb vs4gb vram is a hottly debated issue.     I cant link from here but go to Hardware Section, Upgrade Advice post where I just linked a reliable source that concluded the 4gb vram does little as of right now.    In the future is impossible to say.
