Take a look at my latest Configuration
This is number 528321. Mindful of what both of you told me given my user patterns (a bit less than 25% gaming, the rest HD video manipulation with premiere pro cs5 and some Photoshop work with still images) that I would probably never need SLI, I have selected a single overclocked GTX 580.

Questions:

1.) Should I just forget it, wait 5 months, and buy the X79 with an appropriate motherboard? And maybe, just maybe, by that time Intel will finally support TRIM on its SSD's, so that I could skip the VelociRaptors, and just set up three 250GB Intel 510's in a raid 5 as I would really like to do?

2.) If I decide not to wait, what level of overclocking the CPU makes sense for all practical purposes? The ASUS P8P67 Deluxe will let me go to Stage 2 overclocking, while the Rampage will let me go to Stage 3. Should I care?

3.) I would assume that choosing 16GB of memory at 1600MHz beats 8GB of memory at 2000MHz?

4.)I have seen various postings by you, DSC4ME, recommending Corsair 1000W PSU over the DS version. Why?

5.)If there is no relief from Intel for TRIM support for the 510's, can I add a third 600MB VeloviRaptor and configure it in a raid 5 array for data behind the SSD for OS and Programs? DS does not have a way to do this on the Configurator. I could simply add an external backup drive with a backup schedule, and go with two VelociRaptors in raid 0, but I don't want to have to do that.

6. Back to video cards: if I use the overclocked version of the GTX 580, do I have to liquid cool it? And otherwise, if I decide to do a dual card (just in case I want to increase gaming) will I suffer an experiential disadvantage for my other activities in dropping back to the dual overclocked 570's? I do not want to do this new computer thing for a number of years -- the transition from one to another is just too painful. So I will spend the money now for the future if necessary. I would even go up to dual overclocked 580's if it looks like a good idea.

7. As far as fee boosting is concerned, what is the reason that you are advising against booting the video card and tweaking the OS?

Sorry about the size of this laundry list of questions, but you two have been so very helpful so far that I was hoping that you would help me.

1. yes wait, also intel ssds to support trim, but 510 is not what you want, its the 320 that has the proven controller for reliability.

2. I would go with stage 1 for 24/7 use, or stage 2 and get the 4 year part warranty(highest option of the warranty in the config page).

3. ram amount = more multi tasking, ram speed = speed, but you won't notice the difference in speed much.

4. you want a brand name psu that we know who made so we know what to expect with a 5 year warranty, or do you want a no name psu that we dont' know who made with a 2 year warranty?

5. Again for long term reliability, the 320 is the one you want and has trim.

6. don't get oced versions of gpus, they tend to fail faster, you can oc it higher and better yourself, and depending on your res, you probably don't need it, so what res you gonna be gaming at?

7. the gpu oc here is so mild you will see no difference from it, the os boost does not thing for apps/games speeds, you wont' notice it, and in the future if you need one of those services, it can be a hassle.

I won't comment on your build cause I recommend you wait, but I would change a few things with that build.

In reference to (6.) res is 2560 x 1600.  Does that change anything?

For that res in gaming your best bet is cf 6970, or sli 580, for higher aa settings the 2GB of 6970 does a little better.

and you also want the option of adding a third card, the p67 is not the platform for tri cf/sli, so definitely wait for the x78.

Thank you!  I still do not understand the choice of the 320 over the 510 SSD.  Both have TRIM for single drives.  Neither support TRIM for raid arrays. The 510 has significantly better specs.  As far as long term reliability, how long term is long term?  It is only money, if there is back up or something like a TRIM supported raid 5 (maybe, maybe, in the future!)

Again, thank you so much for being so patient with your responses.

Speed is good but there are faster drives if that is all you care about, but one the drive loses performance, than the speeds will be dropping, performance is dependent on the controller of the ssd also, the 510 does not have the best one, the 320 has the one from the x25, that was a solid controller.

My pleasure and good luck

Hopefully intel will come out with a ssd with that controller but much better speeds.
