Looking to spend between 2000 - 2500 dollars. The minimum would be best if possible. Mainly going to be used to play games (Battlefield 3, Skyrim type games) and some occasional video compositing, editing and 3D modeling/rendering. I'll probably be switching it back and forth from my living room LCD (55") and my computer monitor (22" LCD). I only need a tower and no other accessories. Some wants: 6-core, no SSD, 1-TB drive, option for SLI in the future.

What would be the best build for my money's worth? Thanks.

But hdd prices are very high right now, for same price/less you can get a ssd, and then add the hdd later when their prices come back down to normal.

I'd change the 8gb corsair ram to 8gb of digital storm ram.. as DST keeps saying, ram is all the same.. not worth the bump in price.. and I would take those dollars saved and upgrade the mother board to the ASUS Deluxe... maybe want to drop down the GPU to the GTX570 and upgrade the GPU next year when the new ones come out.. think you should also upgrade that cooler to the Noctua D14.

no problem.. everyone keeps saying that there is only small performance differences between the 570 and 580.. and since new cards are coming out soon, may be a good idea to save some money on gpu now and buying the best one of the new bunch when they come out.

Case is a important part of your config, reason why we love the haf x is because for its price it gives you amazing airflow, better than more expensive cases.

My config is basically best bang for your buck on a the x79 which is what you wanted, so every part was chosen for a specific reason.

DST, thanks so much for helping me out. Sucks for me, thinking my big purchase this year would be a computer, but now have to buy a new car for the family. really sucks. I still want to get on this holiday sale (will it end Dec 31?) and been going over and over customization to get it down to a good price but still great performance. I've got a simple cheaper gfx card in there, im thinking i will eventually upgrade that at some point. please let me know what you think and if it's possible to come down more. thank you again.

Hi e11eventoes..My two cents worth...I have the gtx560 and play BF3 on high, not ultra, and Skyrim on ultra and they both play smooth as a baby's arse.Big%20Smile
The gtx570 is about 20% better with frames, but like others have said, a gpu upgrade when you can will be easy.
Sometimes family expenses do get in the way of all our toys.Cry
Good luck.Big%20Smile

glad to hear the 560 still manages to play those games smoothly. hey, high works for me at this point. im comfortable enough switching out gfx cards that I'm willing to wait later down the road to upgrade. Thanks for the feedback.

The only two things that would "concen" me that I would say, based on your current situation include the power supply and the cooler.  I think for your current situation, the power supply would be sufficient but if you could upgrade to one of the HX series corsair units, that might be a good idea.  If not, I think you will be fine still.  But the cooler that you have is the corsair H80 which is a stage 2 liquid cooler.  I think you may want to switch this to stage 2 air cooling such as the Corsair A70 or even better, the Noctua D14.  I think the noctua is only like $40 more and if you did get the noctua, just make sure to ask for the newer se2011 version to fit the x79 chipset you have there.. Just my thoughts..
System:
HAF X942 / i7 3930k 6-core cpu / ASUS P9x79 Deluxe MOBO
16gb DS ram / Corsair 1050HX PSU / Two - Intel 320 series 120gb SSD's
WD Caviar Black 1TB HDD / GTX570 2.5gb GPU / Noctua D14 Cooler

any advice is good advice. I'm just crossing my fingers that I can finally purchase the computer without anything else going downhill for me. I'll do some of the configurations you mentioned and see where I'm at with price. thanks.

quick question on windows 7 home and professional. is it true that the home version will only read up to 16 GB of ram? eventually i might want to add more ram as well.

I think for your work the 570 is the sweet spot, and your cpu cooler needs to be changed.

why the 850w? I only recommend hx and ax psu from corsair for reliability and perfomrance.

if you want more then 16GB of ram you need win7 pro. keep mobo's limit in mind tho.

Hi e11eventoes,

You are budget limited and making performace compromises to save money. This is a gaming system and you don't need 16Gb of memory. Here is a system that has much better performance than your system playing games like BF-3. I know you want a 3903 CPU but I wouldn't scrifise my GPU power to get it. Nor would I sacrifise the HAF-X case. My build is a compromise in that it doesn't have a SSD.

thanks much. yea, i was hoping I'd be able to use my gaming machine to do some cinema4D and After Effects work on it too. that's why I hope to go with the six-core processor and extra ram. I think if I can't game on ultra settings, i'd at least get by on some at least decent high settings. and maybe if i can do a little bit of freelancing work with the new computer, i'd make up for some cost to get it. hope so. thanks again.

Hopefully last question - Would it be worth it to get a liquid cooling system vs just fans? is my setup sufficient with just the fans?

Not sure what ya picked with the configs above but the D14 or A70 is good-to-go.Big%20Smile
The H for hydro series won't do any better and the air coolers are more reliable.

thanks for the info. man, you don't know how tough it is. :) I really REALLY want to make sure this is the perfect computer for how much money I'm going to put into it. I think I'm almost there. The community here knows way more than i do, so if everyone thinks it's good to go then I feel good about it. This is my final (?) build:
