    Posted: 22 Apr 2010 at 5:51pm
hi, i am planning on buying a new pc in the near future. so, i have started searching around and trying to find the best build possible.
my budget is around 2700 USD. im trying to shave off a few bucks so i can fit a razer lyctosa keyboard into my budget ( i will be buying it elsewhere since i cant get it from DS), and of course im very open to suggestions on any of the components .

i will be having 2 primary uses for this pc gaming and playing games. i have a samsung 22 inch 1680x1050 monitor for gaming and regular computer use and a 42 inch  1920x1080 tv.
i also already have a mouse, speakers, and a crappy keyboard that i would like to replace.

there are a few things im not really willing to change.

1 gpu my configuration must have a ati 5970 gpu on it.
2 a sound card, i really use it and i hate the on board solutions.

there are other components where i am somewhat doubtful

1 the case. i like Raven 1 chassis. but im open to suggestions
2 im having issues selecting the appropiate motherboard.
3 cooling im really lost here.
4 hard drive, i want at least 1.5 tb but im not sure what configuration should be the best.
5 id like to know what practical difference is there between windows 7 home and ultimate.
6 id like some advice on the power supply

those are my main doubts however im open to any other suggestions

here is the build i made:

5970 is complete over kill for 1680x1050 resolution in gaming.

It's even overkill for 1920x1080 resolutions, your just gonna throw away your money by getting the 5970.

1 HAF 932 is a good case, great cooling, very large amounts of space, and room to grow from there.
2 DST is the expert here.
3 DST also a expert here.
4 1.5 TB hardrives i don't recommended, and I'm sure DST won't either.
5 Go with Windows 7 PRO......it can dual boot XP as well.
6 1000W Corsair, if your going to grow in the future and or add another video card.

5970 is not the best card and also pure waste of money for your res, why would you want that card?

which res you gonna be gaming at? 1680x1050 or 1920x1080?

1. there are better cases.

2. we will take care of that.

3. we will take care of that.

4. why do you want 1.5TB for HDD1? that is a horrible idea.

5. you won't need ulitmate, all you need is pro so that you get xp mode, otherwise there is no difference between them that will make any difference to gamers.

6. we will take care of that.

thanks for the quick responses!

i see the 5970 seems to be an issue. ill explain my reason for choosing it.
i dont live in the US and upgrading my pc has proven to be a daunting task in the past. so, i simply wanted to go with the best single card solution for longevity reasons. i know its an overkill right now. but, i want my gpu to last as long as possible.

1, the case. im really open to suggestions here. the main reason i chose the raven 1 is because it comes with removable dust filters on all its intake fans. i have problems with dust and the filters allow me to deal with that problem fairly easily.
i chose the raven 1 over the 2 because of the form factor. im afraid higher end mobos wont fit it. however, if the motherboards that are offered here fit it and it has better cooling i wouldnt mind swapping.

4 HD i just want the HD space here. i would like a better solution as long as it lets me have at least 1.5 tb of total space. i dont know much about which hd configuration is better so i just chose 1 with the capacity im looking for. what would you suggest??

5 both answers provided me with what i wanted to know w7 pro it is. thanks

thank for the replies.

1. even with filters you till get dust, you can get get filters for other cases also. also filters will reduce airflow.

rule for HDD is:

HDD1 = fast small drive: os/apps/games

HDD2 = regular large drive: media/personal/work file storage

Don't fill up your HDD1 more then 50%, if think you will need more room for it then pick a bigger one.

this keeps the os HDD clean and fast, making it easy to manage, scan, backup, etc, and file storage that does not need speed at all won't take up space on a fast drive.

so right now, either a raptor or ssd for HDD1 and a 1TB for for HDD2 should do it for you.

keep in mind that the 5970 is a dual gpu card, as in, you are really working with 1GB of vram and not 2GB, and then the gpus are in internal cf so you are dealing with cf buggs and etc.

as far upgrading goes, what would you do if the 5970 breaks down? which with gpus there is a good possibility, so its the same, should you happen to need a gpu have one sent to you or something, or 2 x 5870 or better yet 2 x 480 is much better then 5970.

for example

thanks for the reply. it has helped me clear lots of doubts.

however i still got a few doubts regarding the gpu and the psu

about the gpu, i think you misunderstood me with the gpu issue. im not worried about it failing or anything like that. when i said longevity i meant on a gaming point of view. i feel that with the 5970 i will be able to play future games at max settings. where as the 480 will probably meet its match sooner.

the question would be if a new game with very high system requirements came out wouldnt it be more likley that the 5970 would handle it better than the 480?

wouldnt the 5970 allow me to future proof my system longer? or what you mean is that at 1600x1050 resolution both card will probably last the same??

about the Psu i was wondering why you choose the 1250W one. wouldnt a 1000W one be fine?? what would be the minimum Wattage i would need for this system?

once again thanks for your responses

no, lol, you misunderstood me I guess, you said:

i dont live in the US and upgrading my pc has proven to be a daunting task in the past

so I was saying, instead of looking at it as an upgrade, why don't you look at it as if the 5970 broke? I imagine if the 5970 broke, you would have the same problems getting another one, as if you were to add a second gpu.

also you could be wrong about the 480 dieing before the 5970, the 480 has more vram (1.5GB) so it can max out games that 5970 can't.

at 1900 x 1200 any games in the near future the 480 can handle easily and with a bit of oc it can do even much better. let me put it to you this way, 3 x 5870(tri fire) or 3 x 480(tri sli) will out last and beat 2 x 5970 (quad fire).

if your res is 1600 x 1200, then 5970/5870/480 are super duper overkill.

I gave you that config as an example, the 1250w is so that you can go dual sli (2 x 480) in the future. that same config with 1 x 5870 would have a 1000w corsair psu for the same reason.

so lets clarify, what will you be gaming on? 1600 x 1200 or the tv with 1900 x 1200?

i will be playing at 1680x1050. the tv is way too big to use with my current room layout. maybe in the future i could accommodate the layout to put it a bit further away and use it a my monitor but right now i use the 1680x1050 monitor.
