Topic: Advice on configPosted: 28 Dec 2010 at 11:45am |

Hi all, I haven't been up to date on computers/hardware for least 4 years and am looking to update my current tower. So I am looking for some advice on the config I came up with. Any comments or suggestions are welcomed. Thanks in advance.
Budget: Budget is around 1300-1400 atm. Only looking for the tower. Expectations: I don't want anything fancy. Just the best value that's gonna last a good while and keep the games running. Usage: 90%+ Gaming, most likely MMOs/RPGs. Special Needs: Don't need much storage all. Which is why I opted for a faster hard drive rather than larger. Stay away from VelociRaptors, they don't any business being in any PC, regardless of budget. Only the newer and bigger 600GB model VR is actually any faster than a normal 1TB 7200RPM HDD (by 5%), the 150GB VR is slower than a 1TB.
If you want a fast OS/apps drive get a small 40GB SSD and just use a cheap conventional HDD for games/movies/music/media. Can't really squeeze a SSD into your budget though, not without sacrificing a lot of your GPU muscle, which is self defeating for a gaming rig. Get a good CPU cooler and the free CPU overclock. With a Noctua NH-U12P you will get a 35-40% overclock, that's a huge increase in power for very cheap! If you absolutely want to keep it under budget, I'd go with this: Ticket #473619, Price: $1406 ($1336 after holiday discount) Chassis Model: Special Deal Hot Seller - HAF 922 Exterior Finish: - Standard Factory Finish Trim Accents: - Standard Factory Finish Processor: Intel Core i5 760 2.8GHz (Quad Core) Motherboard: ASUS P7P55 LX (Intel P55 Chipset) (Model: P7P55 LX) System Memory: 4GB DDR3 1600MHz Digital Storm Certified Performance Series (Highly Recommended) (Hand Tested) Power Supply: 750W Digital Storm Certified (Dual SLI Compatible) (Silent Edition Recommended) Expansion Bay: - No Thanks Hard Drive Set 1: Operating System: 1x (1TB Hitachi/Seagate (7200 RPM) (32MB Cache) Set 1 Raid Options: - No Thanks Hard Drive Set 2: Multimedia\Data: - No Thanks Hard Drive Set 3: Backup\Misc.: - No Thanks Optical Drive 1: DVD-R/RW/CD-R/RW (DVD Writer 24x / CD-Writer 48x) Optical Drive 2: - No Thanks Internet Access: High Speed Network Port (Supports High-Speed Cable / DSL / Network Connections) Video Card: 1x NVIDIA GeForce GTX 470 1.2GB (Includes PhysX Technology) Add-on Card: - No Thanks Sound Card: Integrated Motherboard Audio Extreme Cooling: AIR: Stage 1: Noctua NH-U12P SE Dual 120mm Fans High Performance Cooler H20 Tube Color:- Not Applicable, I do not have a FrostChill or Sub-Zero LCS Cooling System Selected Chassis Airflow: Standard Factory Chassis Fans Internal Lighting: - No Thanks Enhancements: - No Thanks Chassis Mods: - No Thanks Noise Reduction: - No Thanks Boost Processor: FREE: Stage 1: Overclock the processor between 3.3GHz to 3.9GHz (Cooling Upgrade Recommended) Boost Video Card: FREE: Yes, Overclock the video card(s) as much as possible with complete stability Boost Memory: - No Thanks, Please do not overclock my memory Boost OS: - No Thanks, Please do not tweak the services on the operating system Windows OS: Microsoft Windows 7 Home Premium (64-Bit Edition) Recovery Tools: Windows Recovery Toolkit (Bundled with Windows 7 CD) Virus Protection: - No Thanks Office: - No Thanks Benchmarking: - No Thanks Install/Test Game: FREE: Starcraft II (Tryout Edition) with a NVIDIA GeForce GTS 250 or above graphics card Display: - No Thanks Surge Shield: - No Thanks Speakers: - No Thanks Keyboard: - No Thanks Mouse: - No Thanks External Storage: - No Thanks Exclusive T-Shirt: FREE: Digital Storm T-Shirt - Black (Large) Priority Build: - No Thanks, Ship Within 5-15 Business Days After Order Is Successfully Processed Warranty: FREE PROMO: Life-time Expert Customer Care with 4 Year Limited Warranty Or if you don't mind going a little over, switching up to a 570 will get you a whole lot more GPU muscle. Thanks for the replies so far. The first one you listed Dragoon would probably have to be my best bet as far as budget.
As for resolution of the monitor resolution, was planning on getting a 1920 x 1080. Want to get tower first then see what I can fix into my budget exactly for monitor from there. |

for that res you gonna want the 570 gtx, the i7 I listed is better since you can at least upgrade it to a 6 core if you wanted to.
I do like to point out my build after 5% discount comest to be $1401 which is the closest to your budget, but my build has a lower gpu. so either get a 570 gtx with the x58 or the p55 builds, looks like for your price you gonna be at the p55. save more money by going with 500GB HDD, you can always add or upgrade those later, very easy to do.
