I would like some advice on the build I have going below please.
My main uses will be gaming (ex: BF3 ) and photo editing (ex: Photoshop and Lightroom) First question: Is it worth the extra money and is there enough performance upgrade to go with the i7 3770K 3.50 over the i5 3570K 3.40 ? Second question: I run a Dell 30" monitor...will i be happy with the GTX 680 4GB ? Hi prolifik... Welcome to the forums.
That's a real nice build and I would keep the i7-3770k chip, mainly for your editing work. It won't do much for gaming. Here's a similar build to check out that uses the X79 quad channel memory mobo that will give you better perfromance for the Lightroom andPhotoshop, over the Z77's dual channel memory. Config # 745411 Cost $ 2968 Chassis Model: Special Deal Hot Seller - Corsair 600T Exterior Finish: - Standard Factory Finish Trim Accents: - Standard Factory Finish Processor: Intel Core i7 3820 3.6GHz (Turbo Mode up to 3.8GHz) (Quad Core) Motherboard: ASUS P9X79 DELUXE (Intel X79 Chipset) (Features USB 3.0 and SATA 6Gb/s) System Memory: 16GB DDR3 1600MHz Digital Storm Certified Performance Series (Highly Recommended) (Hand Tested) Power Supply: 1050W Corsair Pro Silver 1050HX (Dual/Triple/Quad SLI Compatible) Expansion Bay: - No Thanks Hard Drive Set 1: Operating System: 1x (240GB Solid State (By: Corsair) (Model: Neutron GTX Series) (SATA 6Gbps) Set 1 Raid Options: - No Thanks Hard Drive Set 2: Multimedia\Data: 1x (1TB Western Digital Caviar (7200 RPM) (Model: Black Edition) Hard Drive Set 3: Backup\Misc.: - No Thanks Optical Drive 1: DVD-R/RW/CD-R/RW (DVD Writer 24x / CD-Writer 48x) Optical Drive 2: - No Thanks Internet Access: High Speed Network Port (Supports High-Speed Cable / DSL / Network Connections) Video Card: 1x NVIDIA GeForce GTX 680 4GB (Includes PhysX) Add-on Card: - No Thanks Sound Card: Creative Labs Sound Blaster Recon3D Fatal1ty Professional 5.1 Extreme Cooling: H20: Stage 2: Digital Storm Vortex 240mm Radiator Liquid CPU Cooler (Extreme-Performance Edition) H20 Tube Color:- Not Applicable, I do not have a FrostChill or Sub-Zero LCS Cooling System Selected Chassis Airflow: Standard Factory Chassis Fans Internal Lighting: - No Thanks Enhancements: - No Thanks Chassis Mods: - No Thanks Noise Reduction: - No Thanks LaserMark: - No Thanks Boost Processor: Stage 1: Overclock CPU 4.0GHz to 4.4GHz Boost Video Card: - No Thanks, Please do not overclock my video card(s) Boost Memory: - No Thanks, Please do not overclock my memory Boost OS: - No Thanks, Please do not tweak the services on the operating system Windows OS: Microsoft Windows 8 Professional (64-Bit Edition) Recovery Tools: Windows Recovery Toolkit (Bundled with Windows 7 CD) Virus Protection: - No Thanks Office: - No Thanks Game: - No Thanks Display: - No Thanks Surge Shield: - No Thanks Speakers: - No Thanks Keyboard: - No Thanks Mouse: - No Thanks External Storage: - No Thanks Exclusive T-Shirt: FREE: Digital Storm T-Shirt - Black (Large) Priority Build: - No Thanks, Ship Within 10-15 Business Days After Order Is Successfully Processed Warranty: Life-time Expert Customer Care with 3 Year Limited Warranty Like I said, the X79's wider memory bandwidth will help with editing, etc. With this mobo you could also opt for the 6 core 3930k chip for another $300, depending on the budget and your level of editing. Your build will handle editing just fine, but sometimes the added ram bandwidth helps. Depends on your needs. I put in a HDD. Not sure if you have one you'll stick in later, but the SSD will fill up pretty quick on its own I changed the psu to the 1050HX from your Silverstone. The Silverstone only carries a 3 year warrant I believe and the Corsair 1050HX has a 7 year warranty. The Silverstone is 100% modular and the HX is mostly modular, the mobo cables being hard wires. I left in the Vortex 240mm cooler but the Noctau D14, although huge, has little to go wrong and works great and is quiet. I didn't include the LED fans. Ask DS, but without a side window I'm not sure how much you'll see other than through the top. The noise suppression package is a waste. Don't really need it. I think your 30" monitor will do fine with a single 680. It won't max out all games and stay 60ps plus but most games will play nice. If you want to do all Ultra settings then the secong might be needed. You could try one and always add the other later if not happy. BF3 with the 2560x1600 resolution will play great but might drop intp the 50's fps at times. Still very nice, but some want 60's plus always. I forgot the Bluray player. Just another way to go and good luck. Edited by bprat22 - 01 Nov 2012 at 9:51am |

prolific,
might look hard at the soundcard. The DLX mobo pratt gave you already has 7.1 sound and that soundblaster card has mixed reviews and in some cases standalone sound cards can cause issues with the video cards.. (I was looking at one for my build).
notice pratt dropped the mem down to DS 1600 from corsair 2133 which might be a good reason to get 32GB since memory is cheap......
According to lots of folks the LED performance fans are also somewhat loud....
I got the noctura cooler because it is quieter than a radiator and as pratt said, a big block of aluminum doesn't break. It will still dissapate some heat even if the 2 fans fail. It does take up a LOT of space and does limit you to low profile memory.
