I'm not looking for a top of the line computer, but I also want something that can take some games I throw at it pretty well, specifically, Spore, Oblivion, Crysis, and other new games.
I asked for help a while ago, but after messing around a little bit with the config Tyler gave me, this is what I came up with, I was wondering if this would be able to tackle the games I mentioned, and any others coming out in the near future. The ticket is number 176499 Chassis: Digital Storm 750Si Exterior Finish: - Standard Factory Finish Interior Finish: - Standard Factory Finish Power Supply: 550W Corsair HX (Dual SLI Compatible) (Silent Edition) Processor: Intel Core 2 Duo E8500 3.16GHz (1333MHz Front Side Bus) (6MB Cache) Motherboard: Asus Rampage Formula (Chipset: Intel X48) (Supports CrossFire) System Memory: 4GB DDR2 OCZ at 800MHz Card Reader: - No Thanks Hard Drive 1: 500GB Western Digital (16MB Cache) (7200 RPM) (SATA) Hard Drive 2: - No Thanks Raid Option: - No Thanks Hard Drive 3: - No Thanks Optical Drive 1: DVD±R/RW/CD-R/RW (DVD Writer 20x / CD-Writer 48x) (LightScribe Edition) Optical Drive 2: - No Thanks Wireless Access: High Speed Network Port (Supports High-Speed Cable / DSL / Network Connections) Video Card: ATI Radeon HD 4850 512MB TV Tuner: - No Thanks Sound Card: Integrated Motherboard Audio Extreme Cooling: Air Cooled Stage 2 (Silent Artic Cooling Heat-sink Upgrade (Copper Heatpipes) Internal Lighting: Blizzard Internal Lighting (Blue Edition) (Cold Cathode Tubes) Modifications: - No Thanks Boost Processor: - No Thanks, Please do not overclock my processor Boost Video Card: - No Thanks, Please do not overclock my video card(s) Boost Memory: - No Thanks, Please do not overclock my memory Tweak Windows: - No Thanks, Please do not tweak the services on the operating system Windows OS: Microsoft Windows XP Home (Includes Service Pack 2) Restore Kit: Digital Storm Specialized Recovery System (DVD Image Based) Protection: - No Thanks Office: - No Thanks Benchmarking: - No Thanks Install/Test Game: - No Thanks LCD Display: - No Thanks Surge Shield: - No Thanks Speakers: - No Thanks Keyboard: - No Thanks Mouse: - No Thanks External Storage: - No Thanks Warranty: 3 Year Platinum Care Extended Parts & Labor Warranty What I'm really unsure about though is if the 4850 is good enough or should I upgrade to something else? Or if the 550w will cut it for this system? |

Hey Sardonic
While I'm not an expert by any stretch of the imagination I have noticed a few things from lurking around here for a few months...
First off your system isn't going to take full advantage of the 4gb of RAM you have unless you choose to go with a 64bit Operating System....and secondly graphics card selection depends quite heavily on the resolution you plan to be playing. With that in mind you'll get better help if you can specify how big a monitor you'll be playing on.

Probably a 19-22 inch on whatever resolution looks best on that, not sure.
Should I upgrade from XP to 64 bit Vista? I heard some bad things about Vista and have used windows XP for as long as I've had my own computer and it seems fine. |

One other thing I just noticed was if you are planning on Crossfire with another 4850 later on down the road you will need to consider a better PSU than the 550w one that you currently have listed.

Something to consider. While most games don't utilise quad cores, Crysis is one that does. (If your pc has one). Also, regarding Vista... I saw one review where Crysis ran as well with AA on running with DX10 vs running Crysis with windows XP and DX9 and AA off. Basically, the new vid cards run Crysis better with DX10.
As far as the vidcard, the next step up as far as price vs performance would be the HD4870. That would be a good upgrade from the HD4850 if you have the extra money. If you wanna go for broke, go with the HD4870x2 and later can get a second for some crazy crossfireX action! Serious overkill there... well, never know with Crysis...Edited by widdlecat - 21 Aug 2008 at 4:09am |

Thanks for all the feedback guys.
![]() But I was wondering, should I put in the extra couple of dollars to go to a Nvidia GTX 260 and a 750i mobo? |
