Hi,
I'm looking to relace my six year old Gateway fx400 with a machine that will give good fps at fairly high resolutions and will also be upgradeable for the next few years without having to replace the motherboard. This is what I've come up with, what do you think? What's your budget? You have made some higher end selections mixed with some budget choices that makes it hard to see where you're going. IMO you should think about getting a higher end monitor to build around. What you see is like 70% of the experience, no?
Win 7 Ultimate has nothing you'll need for gaming. Switch to Pro.
The 1600 ram is better, and ATM is cheaper (?); must be due to supply situation.
I'll let the smart folks address the other issues.
As to monitors, everyone will tell you to go for an IPS panel. The resolution you pick determines everything else.

Good advice about the monitor, I was attracted to the cheap bundle price and forgot about quality momentarily. Do you recommend any of the monitors offered by DS? I've been looking at monitor reviews and frankly am not too clear on the subject. I have no objection to DS getting the markup instead of Newegg if the quality is good. As for budget, I'm trying to stay around $3500. It's really more machine than I need right now, but I'd like it to last.

if you can spend 400 to 600 then check out the Dell UltraSharp U2410 and HP ZR24w, those are both 24" monitors, when looking for monitors what you want is an IPS panel, these panels have the best picture quality, look for a monitor that has the same Viewing Angle, both vertical and horizontal, and is at or above 170°, this is a sign of a quality panel (IPS) on a monitor, assuring great picture quality.
assuming your monitor will be one of those or a 24" with 1900 x 1200, then: Nvidia system: Here you go Ticket# 407710 --- Price: $3017 (To see this build click here) Price after current promotion $2867 Copy of Specifications: Chassis Model: Cooler Master HAF 932 Exterior Finish: - Thanks for the advice. One question I have is the motherboard. I have the impression that a year or two from now I'll wish I'd bought a board with 6gb SATA support, especially if I use an ssd for my OS. What do you think about this?

I think you are right, but you would be needing a true sata 3.0 which will not be out till middle of next year or so, when intel releases the new south bridge.
any board out right now is not true sata 3.0, also, your ssd would have to sata 3.0 also, otherwise it does not make a difference, both mobo and the device its connecting to have to be sata 3.0 for one to take advantage of it. Edited by DST4ME - 18 May 2010 at 8:01pm |

Thanks again for your help. Found the ZR24w for $389 (free shipping) at Erie Computer. Here's my latest attempt. Decided to bust my budget withe the SSD and sound card. Also went with the ATI card for lower power requirement.

Separated at birth...? Dude, I placed my order with Erie last Sat! Great price and free shipping! Also, that is the build I would have gotten if I was as good looking as you. Except for the HAF... I love my Sniper. Pull the trigger!

Well, the case is the one item I'm not sure about. Originally wanted a Hailstorm but that's probably overkill. What do like about the Sniper vs. the HAF?

they are both great cases, I like the haf for the bigger fans and better airflow, but both are great cases, you can't go wrong with either.

Keep in mind that the default front HAF 932 fan is a 230mm red LED.
If that doesn't fit with your blue theme you'll have to get it replaced with a blue 200mm LED fan. |

Hadn't realized that. Guess I could go with the Sniper instead. According to another thread they're all blue (if I read it correctly). Thanks.
Also, does anyone have anything bad to say about the Sapphire Vapor-X 5870? There's a little chatter around the net that the new ones aren't as good as earlier ones. |

The Sniper doesn't offer as much air flow as the HAF 932 though, keep that in mind. As for the Vapor-X, one of them doesn't use the standard reference board, though I forget if it was the old one or the new one. Meaning standard water cooling blocks won't fit on it. |

Finally managed to stop playing long enough to write this. Thanks to everyone at Digital Storm, the new system is perfect. Arrived quickly, booted fine right out of the box, utterly reliable so far. And fast - I can do a shutdown/restart in thirty seconds, makes patching pretty easy. As for performance, I don't worry about it any more, just play. And Cretae, I love the sniper case, my friends are very impressed. Well, that's it - have to go back to my playing. Thamks to DST4ME and Cretae for the config help. Bye.
