Here's the build link:
Will be using this PC for Games like Civ IV for Movies Music and Internet,
would like to know if some changes need to be made or if this will do the job.

Air Cooled Stage 1 will be a very bad choice I think. That case is smaller, and your running Quads and a 8800 Ultra.

I would agree with Kclemens, up it to at least stage 2 to get the better cooler it is not a big price hit.
For what you are doing do you really need more than a terabyte of disk? Cut the drives down a smidge and use the money to get the creative xtreme gamer sound card, especially if you plan to do alot of music and video playing the sound quality is better and it takes the load off your processor for audio. I would say this should do nicely and all you lose to pay for the updates is 250 gig of HD (Leaving you a mere 1 terabyte) http://www.digitalstormonline |

When I ordered on May 15th, they called back the next day and said that there was an "industry wide shortage" of the Q6600 processor with no date when they might be able to get more.
I've been wondering why they still leave it as a possible configuration option if they don't have it available. I expect that it's unintentional, but it could easily be perceived as deceptive (to be honest, I was a little suspicious at the time).
Who knows... maybe they've got more now, but just be prepared to switch to another processor if they're still out.

I wonder if thats actually true, the fired employees said that was a lie, and ive not once ever seen tigerdirect or Newegg run out of Q6600s. E8500s, 6700, etc yes, but not a Q6600.

lol. I was online when they hijacked the forums that night. Thats really all i can say about it. They mentioned that its a tactic DS uses, I didnt really believe it and i sorta dont now, but a shortage of Q6600s sounds kinda fishy to me. I havent run into one online site yet that doesnt have a supply of Q6600s right now
Id be more understanding of it was a rare chip, but the Q6600s are not rare at all.

The Q6600 is on short supply, mainly because Intel is pushing system integrators to have their customers use the new Q9 series processors. You can select the Q6600, if we have it in stock, we will definitely be able to use it, however I highly suggest going with the Q9300 instead of the Q6600.

the 9450 is a better chip in every way, more than worth the mere 110 bucks extra
no reason to buy a 6600 anymore, so i dont see why it would even matter if they were in stock
furthermore no reason for intel to even keep making them unless they were going to drastically cut the price and sell it like the "8800 gt 512" of the processor world

The reason to buy a Q6600 is because they are cheaper...

Thanks for all your input, based on that and trying to keep costs down here is the new build:
Is it worth $127 more to go with the Q9450 and the extreme gamer sound card versus the Q9300 and the Audigy sound card, It's not a ton of money but would the perfomance difference be noticable and therefore be worth the dough.

Yes definitely skip the Audigy, it offers no benefit at all really.
As to the 9450 vs 9300, I think it is a much better chip, first off you double the cache, which is huge, plus as many here have said, quad vs dual core many games respond better to higher clocks than more cores, so 2.66 ghz is better. I may be biased, (the 9450 is a favorite chip of mine) but I would definitely put the cash into it. The performance increase from that 127 bucks will be noticable. |

The increase in the cache memory should have some impact on performace as the 9450 has double the 9300. Not a huge bump but a bump none the less.
Honestly i wouldnt know about the sound card differences. Keep in mind there are two parts to a good sound set up. A card and speakers. You gotta have good ones for both or you end up wasting money. So if you got a nice pair of 2.1s or 5.1s then id say a sound card is probably worth it. Me personally, I have a nice pair of 5.1s but i wanted to give the onboard a shot because im not a huge sound nazi....if I dont like it I can always install the sound card myself, it isnt that hard. Either way im saving a bit of cash.

I just mentioned that the audigy is pointless... either get the xtreme gamer or stick with on board, Audigy is not better, and in some cases may actually be worse than onboard sound.

I also have a nice new monitor still in the box and waiting; all I need now is my machine...

Yep, still Stage 2. I'm trying to be patient and hoping that everything is fine, but it's tough not calling them every day!
I had a tech call me and say they were short on 850 cases, so they were substituting a 950 and that my machine would be a priority build.
That was a week and a half ago and my "Stage" hasn't changed at all...

Ok I'm going for the extra bucks for the Q9450 and ExtremeGamer but you guys are scaring me with how long it may take to get it, it looks like 3-4 weeks, I thought 1 week to 10 days would be the timeframe. Is it the complexity of your systems or is that what is to be expected ?

My system right now is on Stage 5, and I ordered on 5/22. I expect I will be getting shipped my system based on a phone call I just had with Alex either end of this week or Monday next week.I am hoping he is right and that is indeed my ship date as that is right on the money (It would put me at either 11 or 12 business days from order to ship.
My computer had alot of hardware, and some higher scale hardware (you can see the basics in my sig) but no overclocking, so I am hoping it will pass qa first run through and be on its way so I can join the legions of DSO system owners :) |

Memorial day holiday didnt really help. They were probably working at less then half capacity the friday before and the tuesday after and probably 2/3s cap the rest of that week judging by how my work went at my office.
My computer is probably somewhat complex, but nothing major, no overclocking option, stage 3 air cooling probably somewhat of a pain. Other then that the componets are fairly new that could be a problem too the 1000W corsair, E8500 etc.

I have heard the 650 case is not as efficient a cooler so with air cooling only it might be best to avoid overclocking.
You are not likely to get a good solid overclock without better cooling anyway. Just my thoughts :) I tend to prefer the more stable mode of operation the chip was designed for... your mileage may vary :) |

Just one note. The case you want doesn't have a window, so unless you are going to mod it, the case lighting is kinda wasted. Just a thought. Also, it is a BTX arrangement, so your graphics card will be above the cpu and in the warmer area of the case. The top cooling is not very good, so I hope your graphics card exhausts air outside the case. Mine doesn't, so I wound up installing a pci slot exhaust fan. My thinking is that on my next pc purchase, I will do my best to get an excellent cooling case like the TJ09.

Yes, we throwing our hats into the ring saw the case was a poor case for cooling of high end components, thus why on only air I advised him to drop over clocking...
The rest of the stuff will bit a bit warm, but running at appropriate clocks, the hardware should be ok just on air with good wiring pinned back and out of the way. and if it does get bad, his config has room for a pci fan card without any issue. I would think it should be fine. Edited by Kliebor2 - 06 Jun 2008 at 6:18am |

Looking at the cases from their link it looked like it had a big window but I guess it was no window just showing the inside, anyway the build has been changed to a 750si case with stage 3 cooling still no OC though, hopefully that will work out well. Thanks for all the advice it has been greatly appreciated.

You would have been fine with the 650i case, the 750 is a nicer case though... personally I am a mega hater of cases with front doors, I just like to be able to get at my drives without an extra step :)
so my cases of choice were either the 750 or the 950... and due to my desire for 2 honkin huge 9800GTX I decided discretion was the better part of valor and went with the 950 si case... I really like the clean lines of both the 750 and the 950 :) |
