    Posted: 17 Jun 2012 at 8:40am
I am finally about to take the plunge and purchase my first DS desktop.  I hope to have the purchase complete by the beginning of July and would like to remain around a $3000 budget, but it would be fantastic to come in under that if possible to shift cost onto a new monitor & accessories.

I will mainly be using this PC to play games online as well as daily tasking, but most of that will be on a laptop.  I would like to remain impressed with quality over the course of several years, but do not expect to remain top of the line for more than 14sec past purchase time. Upgradeability is a desired feature, which is an added benefit of DS products.

Desired games: BF3, Crysis, other FPS shooters, and other less taxing games - catch up on the C&C editions I have missed out on.

Other usage: Office suite, photo-editing, daily email and internet

I have been searching the forums for tips given to other builders and have modified my build accordingly; however I still want to throw it on here to get any advice/input prior to final build and purchase. I bolded all the options I actually have on the item just for easier reading. I have listed my concerns and questions after the build specs.

Based on what I had read I made the following modifications to my build:

OC a 3570 vs a 3770
Kept it at 1600Mhz ram vs 2000 or 2133
Jumped to the 105HX PS vs the 1000W Digital Storm Version
I made the change to AIR Stage 2
Dropped the Killer 2100

I also chose the Intel SSD vs the Corsair based on only a single instance of its mention, but wanted to inquire if the Corsair would be an adequate option simply because it cuts cost, although that would of course limit space. I am more interested in opinions of is quality.

I will hopefully be able to wire directly into my router, but if not and have to go wireless what suggestions would anyone have or a type of wireless receiver if you favor any over the MOBO capabilities.

I chose the Radeon 7950 over the 7970 based on reviews I found showing minimal improvement for the extra cost.  However, I only chose AMD out of past loyalty but am willing to be persuaded to switch to NVIDIA.

Will potentially be requiring a new monitor as I currently use a Samsung T260HD Monitor/TV for my computing use but for my desk depth it is a little too close to my face for that size -- if there are any suggestions there.

Thanks in advance as I will only be able to check this post semi-frequently with the upcoming work week.

Hi BiohazardX-87........Welcome to the forums.

That is a real nice build, giving you the option to sli/cf in the future if needed.

I would drop the Zalman fans.. They are noisy and just take away from the HafX's great, the best, airflow.  Also drop the noise suppresion package for the same reason.  It's money wasted.

I would change the 7950 for the gtx670.  In most games on a variety of resolutions it beats the 7950 and saves you $96.  Here's alink to compare the two.

Crysis Warhead is the exception, but even then is is real close in fps.

The Deluxe mobo has a internet  port like most boards for the router and also the Deluxe  has built in WiFi .

The Noctua d14 and stage 2 oc'ing is right on.

Make those changes and your build is right on, but your decision as always.  You could take the money saved by making those changes and add another 670 for sli, 2x gtx 670 for max gaming on a 24" monitor at 1920x1080 if that's the way you went and stay under $3000.  The Dell UltraSharps are a good pick.

Best of luck and keep us updated.Big%20SmileBig%20Smile

Dropped the Zalmans, dropped the Noise Suppression.

Switched to the GTX 670 2GB, and am contemplating SLI 2x 670 2GB. I wanted to ask a question first.

Would having only the single 670 2 GB be sufficient to run those desired applications and leave it open to add another 670 later on this year in hopes of price decrease. It would not necessarily degrade my experience up front since I have never had anything this powerful anyway, and it would save some cash to purchase a new monitor KB&Ms.

Just interested in the performance of a single 2GB 670

The single gtx 670 is a great card and will play games like BF3 and Crysis on High settings on a 24" monitor mentioned.    You can't do Ultra settings with everything turned up, but High settings looks and plays real nice.    This setup will do sli no problem with the mobo and psu you have , whenever you need it to.

Also back to an original question, would the crucial SSD be sufficient for this setup, or is the Intel a large enough improvement in performance that it is worth the cost?

The Intel and the Corsair are about the same performance-wise. The Intel is simply larger, and it has an extra two years on the warranty. The Corsair should be fine.
