This build is $2822. I decided on the HAF X case and the 1250W PSU so I could have options for upgrading (space and power for SLI??) in the future.  I also decided on the chassis fan upgrade because I'm hella scared Clap about overheating.

Any tips? Ideally, I would prefer a computer that is a tad cheaper. I'm strongly tempted to nix the 80gb SSD to save cash, but I hear from the boards that a SSD is crucial for good performance. Is that true? Do you think there's anything I can jettison? Note that I am partial to good audio in games, so I'm gonna keep my audio card LOL. Also, I'm going to keep my ole Acer al2051w monitor for a while yet (max res is 1680x1050), though in the future I might want to upgrade to a monitor with 1980x1200. Will this GPU handle that?

Thanks in advance..

ssd is not a necessity but its very nice to have, it can be easliy added later, so if budget is tight drop it, then end of this year intel should come out with a new line that is faster and perhaps a bit cheaper, or it might drop the prices on the current intel ssds, so upgrade to a ssd then.

drop fan upgrade, its loud, your temps are over heating because there is something wrong with your cooler or your room temp is extremely high, either way, loud fan upgrade will not help.

drop fan controller is pure waste of money.

for 1600 x 1200 we recommend the 470/5850, for 1900 x 1200 we recommend 480/5870.

yes your mobo and psu allow you to add another 480, tho as stated above, your 480 is more power then you need for your current res.

other then mentioned above, your build looks good.

Price $2288
consider this
i would drop the ssd, judging by your post and your res, you arent a super benchmarker, the ssd is certainly good, but a 7200 is not going to bog you down. plus, the price of these will be coming down as a little more time goes by, and they are insanely easy to add to your system at a later time

also i would drop even having the ability  for sli, the 480 will support you up to 2560x1600 which is wayyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy over what you listed as your needs. again, based off your post, i see pretty much no reason to even consider sli

so heres the cool news, with the money you save with my suggested changes, you are low enough to still get the case you want, get good liquid cooling for your processor, and land safely under 2300.
really... you could even still get the ssd and come in around $2500.. but like i said, i would just wait a little bit personally

this set up will definitely not overheat, not that anything from dso would... but this will surely keep you cool and quiet Angry

Have DS add the Optional Top fan to your HAF-X so you have 2 big fans on the top sucking hot air out

Ya those fans won't disrupt the airflow and I doubt they're going to be expensive

Hi Guys,

I'd like to thank everyone for their help with this--particularly !ender, for the new build, and SemperFuzz, for pointing out the top fan option. I'm thinking about ordering the new rig fairly soon, though I could wait if DS is going to have a sale soon.

I'm still thinking things over, and will keep everyone informed about my future decision. One thing I'm still considering is whether I'm future-proofed with a 750W PSU. Assuming I'm still going single-card in the future, will that psu be enough to handle new gpu's?

I am sure the 750 PSU will be fine for any single card no problem except for the Sapphire Toxic 5970.  I have been going back and forth because i want the new Corsair AX-1200 just because it is so awesome and if they ever work out the SLI bugs i might go SLI in the future.  If  i go 750 then i am stuck single card only

yea even the 480 requires a 600w psu, and i bet it will be a while before we see that req get much higher on single gpu cards as 500ish watts has been pretty standard for a while

ya 480 can't play games at max settings and good aa at 2560 x 1600.

I have be honest, I don't like the config suggest here to you at all, there is not need for LC with stage 1 oc, temps are gonna be great with Noctua D14, there is no reason to go with haf-x, bad idea to go wiht DS psu over brand names here.

@GamerGrey I like your own build better, if you don't think you will ever go sli, then the 750w corsair psu will do, main reason I like your build is that money is spent on thing that are important, your build will have much better performance and growth then the one suggested.

he said he "might upgrade to 1980x1200" i was making a point
2560 x 1600 is not related to his needs in any way

who said he had to stay at stage 1 oc? might as well add it becuase its free, lc would be for moar power

he chose the haf x, unrelated again

building a pc around the monitor = bottleneck
building a pc around budget = most for your money

completely wrong, my budget is 2000 , according to the above I would endup with a pc with a 480 cause its in my budget, but then cause my res is low the 480 is too much for me and not most for my money, this waste of money can be avoided if the person who helped me, build a pc around the res, as for 1900 x 1200 there is no bottleneck.

for gaming one has nothing to gain from higher oc then stage 1, stage 2 oc is not free and requires LC which is more money.
