After you receive your new DS rig, what software do you load onto it (other than games)??
Type of software and brand/title would be greatly appreciated!!! (want to understand what is needed)

damon you dont need to add anything, dso installs your windows and all of your drivers, so when you get it out of the box, all you do is add the programs you want, theres nothing you "need" to add

!ender_ is right as to specific programs, that's all in what you need/like for your computing. This may seem simplistic, but one of the very first things you NEED, though, is solid internet protection: firewall, antivirus, antispam, anti malware.
Eset is very highly rated by reviewers. Probably the best paid for solution. Very highly recommended by many forum members. I use Microsoft Essentials, which is a free download from MS for 3 reasons.
1. In a recent review of security suites by Maximum PC, a mag I have read for nearly 15 years, and trust, MSE got an 8, and Eset got a 9 of 10.
2. I am highly secure that my scurity software is not going to conflict with my OS.
3. I am CHEAP.
Don't be like me, get Eset.

you can also use a wonderful program called ccleaner just for general cleaning (not antivirus)
great for temp crap that needs to be cleaned from time to time and registry too
basically, you run this once every 2 weeks by clicking 5 buttons (you dont have to config anything) and it dusts off the software for you

for firewall and anti virus get eset smart security.
for keeping pc clean, install/uninstall/startup app editing, use CCleaner, I don't use or recommend people cleaning their registry, only mess with your registry if you have errors from it. a good anti spyware program is spysweeper. other then that, its whatever apps you use. MS Essentials works with every MS product. MSE was an 8, Eset was a 9. Obviously Eset is better by 12.5% in MaxPC's opinion.
Don't forget, I'm cheap. DST owns a freeware site and he pays for Eset.

They clearly stated in above that eset is not free, CCleaner is free, MSE is free. the only one they didnt say was free or not was spysweeper, spysweeper is not free, you have to pay for it.
You should go ESET for AV and Firewall and use spysweeper for spyware as dst4me said |

Ya if you want quick, then eset and spysweeper (SS) are great.
On my systems, I have spysweeper disabled, but run it once a week for a full sweep, keep in mind at the end of the day, there biggest form of protection you have is commonsense, without that there is no av/firewall/anti spyware that can keep you clean/safe. If you want freeware, AS (anti spyware) SS being number 1 I would say Malwarebytes is number 2 and it does scan and clean, but you get no real time protection, you will need the shareware version to do that, and if you gonna pay for an AS, then pay for SS. |

beware that installing norton means it will NEVER come out, unless you pull some elaborate uninstall suite and process like I did
(Revo Uninstaller {Analysis, Uninstall, File Sweep, Registry Sweep}, CCleaner Sweep, CCleaner Registry Sweep, 2nd CCleaner Sweep, 2nd CCleaner Registry Sweep, regedit Manual Registry Sweep, Manual Program Folder Sweep). for me, ESET for antivirus, CCleaner for tuneup. defragging, well, I use MS Contig in a GUI format called "Power Defragmenter". Performance Monitors, well, Windows 7's Task Manager already does a pretty damn good job. For temp monitoring, RealTemp, CPU-Z, and/or GPU-Z. that's pretty much it. If I was planning on going the no cost avenue like Cretea what would be my best choices to install?
I plan on using this rig just for gaming and only very occasional going to internet to look stuff up.
Thoughts on the best free combo would be awesome (not up on the latest and best for these types of products).....THANKS FOR THE HELP!!!!!

Microsoft Essentials, CCleaner, Malwarebytes. Essentials will run autoscan you schedule weekly, the other 2, you run yourself. Once or maybe twice a week be good for those 2. Good to go.

MSE works okay for me, the only thing is, you can't pause a scan (you can stop it though), and there's no "silent" mode where it doesn't or do anything because it thinks you're gaming or something.

2. Doesn't MS Essentials have malware protection built-in?
3. Why would you need both?
Just trying to understand the benefits/reasons for Malwarebytes. (I have MS Essential and CCleaner installed on my new rig and they seem to be working well).

I haven't ordered my DS rig yet but any new PC gets MS Office suite, primarily for Outlook, Word, Excel.

I've had avast! catch viruses on others' PCs that ESET completely ignored. Oh well. I'll knock on wood, it's worked great for me, but as another poster said above, no amount of security will help you out if you don't use common sense. I've run without any internet security for a year and a half and never had a problem. 'course I don't do any social networking nor do I visit shady websites... Just be smart, only you can prevent forest fires.... or something. |

Yes MSE has a malware catcher, but the question is what is good and also free. Malwarebytes is one of the best. Whereas you cannot run two virus scanners on the same machine without asking for trouble, you can run more than one malware scanner (not at the same time, of course) that may catch a bad guy the other one missed. Especially good, I think, is one that runs on auto, and another that you choose to run when nothing else is going on. It's not necessary, just double safe.

In terms of free malware catchers, I like spybot search and destroy just for it's "immunization" feature. It's scanning isn't great, but you can have other malware things for that. Blocks a lot of browser based flotsam from ever getting on your pc in the first place. Unfortunately, it doesn't support chrome yet.

I have a new rig that should arrive this week - has been in stage 5 a few days - AND got a call they didn't have a particular HDD, but will substitute another.
I've heard a lot of great stuff about Eset - which I don't have but will get to check out! I do already have Kaspersky 2010 Internet Security. Received it in with a laptop I bought from a friend - never installed! What of that, i.e., Kaspersky? As for CCleaner and spybot, both excellent apps, have used both for years! As for Norton, my wife has that on one of her laptops, which I've seldom used, so I'm not very familiar with it. Is it really true Norton is difficult to completely erase/eradicate? |
