i was reading around on the website and i read that your processor can make AI's a little smarter??? something like AI's on an i7 would be a little smarter than AI's on a coure 2 duo or whatever. does any1 know if this i s true or not and y

Artificial INtellegence otherwise playing against the computer
this is making me wanna play WC3 with someone on another computer with a slower processor and see if the insane cpu reacts or does anything faster Edited by inferno23 - 19 Jun 2009 at 10:26am |

Sure, if a particular game is designed to run it's AI routines on one or more threads/cores separate from the rest of the game processing, the AI might have more time to think and make better decisions. The AI would also have to be designed to make the best choice in the time available. I wouldn't be surprised if some modern games, but certainly not all, do this.

Huuummm, doesn't this all sound like Big Blue, chess matches, Boris Kasperoff (sp)? It all boils down to what BtC is saying...the more "moves" a computer can compute (in a short period of time--hopefully) will result in a higher level of play. Leading to the conclusion...that the bigger, badder, better the processor the smarter the "AI" opponent

Galactic Civilizations 2 and Supreme Commander 2 are good examples of this. I don't know that it's a very common thing though - if the AI will run on separate thread, the game's marketing literature will usually make sure you know about it...

Having a i7 vs a Core 2 Duo will not make your games "smarter." It will simply make them run faster/smoother, etc... |

Based solely on logic (as opposed to facts) I find it hard to believe this statement is true. Are you suggesting that games allow AI processing to limit frame rates? Edited by Bill the Cat - 19 Jun 2009 at 3:54pm |

All I am saying is, that, the i7 does not have any special hardware features that are designed to make in-game AI smarter. Going with the i7 will make your games obviously perform better than a Core 2 Duo, but, not not the AI.
AI is not linked to performance, as in, the faster your CPU, the smarter the computer will be. A faster CPU will make the overall game faster, which would make the AI faster, that's all...

Correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't Artificial Intelligence designed and programmed into the software? Yes, AI doesn't effect the speed or the agility of your hardware, but that's because it's programmed into the software. Playing against the software, that has AI programmed into it, it's very possible for the game to learn your habits and begin to "understand" your maneuvers by predicting the next move according to the programmed strategic thinking of artificial intelligence. So, connecting the processor to AI is not logical considering one does not have anything to do with the other in it's core function.
