I am almost finished deciding on my new build but had a few questions. I am not planning on using more than one video card, so I figure I don't need an expensive motherboard or super duper power supply. I want something fast but don't have to have the fastest computer on the block. I was looking at the Digital Storm 950si but don't want to spend almost $3000
1--Do I really need the latest greatest fastest videocard? I like gaming but mainly use my computer for photo and video editing. Rather than a GTX 295 I was thinking of the GTX 275 for almost $300 less or maybe one of the Radeon cards
2-Do I really need the Intel i7 3.2 ghz when I could use the 266ghz for almost $400 less
3-I don't really like most of the computer speakers I have heard and have a really nice 2 channel stereo system. Could I connect the motherboard's onboard sound to my preamp or would a sound card be better (and which sound card)
4-And finally the motherboard. Since I don't plan on using three video cards, what do you think of the EVGA X58 LE

1. depending on what size monitor you have I would go with a ATI 5850 card, unless it is a 30"
2. go with the 920 chip, at 2.66Ghz and overclock it
3. The ATI card will allow DTS MA, so just output it to your pre-amp
4. that MOBO is fine for you application.

Thanks for the prompt reply. My Samsung monitor is 24", so the ATI 5850 card will suffice. You also states that the video card had DTS MA, but to I use the HDMI outputs and does the card come with an HDMI-to-component adapter? |

I am pretty sure that it does not come with a component adapter. here is a bit about the card, and audio

Hi, Justin has already answered most of your questions suffeciently but I'll give you my opinion.
1. No you don't need the greatest video card for gaming at 1920x1080/1200, 1 5870 will let you play most games at high or near maxed settings. My personal recommendation would be to go with 2 5850s in crossfire, this will future proof your computer for a few years. 2. The i7-975 is the same card as the 920 with the exception that it has an unlocked multiplier to allow a bit more flexability for overclocking. A 920 @ 3.9ghz will provide the same benchmarks as an overclocked 975 @ 3.9ghz. The 960 is also locked. Go with the 920 for sure. 3. No clue :( 4. The X58 LE will work just fine for you and has solid overclocking potential. |
