I just got the email about my new system hitting Stage 7. In my system I got the Intel Core i7 3770K 3.50 GHz (Unlocked CPU) (Quad Core). I also requested the overclocking 4.5GHZ to 4.8GHZ. THe email stated my system was overclocked to 4.5GHZ. I'm not feeling very happy that my $3000+ system was overclocked to the lowest of the range.

Can someone set me straight on this? Is this typical or should I be bothered? Trying to remain excited about the system but this kind of brought me down a notch. ugh

It would be so much more effective to just call DS directly and ask them.

Only they can answer why they do what they do and for what reason.

I'd give them a call if you want the specifics of why it was 4.5 rather than 4.8, but its definitely a matter of stability. Some chips do better within DS's threshold than do others, its nothing to worry about, but you certainly have every right to inquire. That being sad, you will tell no difference in that .3 Ghz loss as far as performance goes.

The range is there, but, it all depends on the chips and temps, etc... A 4.5Ghz overclock versus 4.8Ghz is a very, very small difference. You might see 1-2 extra FPS in games for example. That 0.3GHz makes a very small performance difference, but, if we pushed the PC to 4.8GHz, that will make a big difference in thermals and also in the overall stability of your system.

I understand you feel it's a bummer, but, it's really not. Plus, we rather have you enjoy a stable and problem free system. The CPU is already overclocked an extra full 1GHz from the stock 3.5Ghz setting.

I'm sure you can push the CPU higher too, you'll just need to tweak the voltages and multiplier.

My new system was build around the i5 3570 CPU and it too was OCed to 4.5Ghz.  I monitored my system while playing my games and they don't stress the CPU at all.  While my Max temps hit in the low 80's when stressed 100% by Prime95 in actual gaming Max temps only hit in the upper 50's to low 60's.  It was the graphics cards that really got stressed in real world gaming.

I know some games are more CPU intensive than others but for the most part you shouldn't see any difference in peformance between a 4.5Ghz OC and a 4.8Ghz OC.

You can run Prime95 to stress your CPU under 100% load to get your max temps. Also GPUz can stress your GPUs to 100% to get their max temps. Then you can run HWMonitor to check your CPU and GPU temps under gaming conditions.  Comparing the 2 will till you how much stress your games are putting on your CPU and GPU.

I hope you find this helpful.

My system was overclocked to 4.6 but was not stable when playing game's Alex and Richard are helping me out to try and make it stable. As of now I have it rock solid at 4.4ghz . Would it hurt to ask for a refund on the $69 charge for the overclock? I know theres not much difference in 4.4ghz and 4.6 just like to be closer to the BIG 5ghz

Thanks everyone. I wrote to DS for an explanation right after I got the email so I turned to the forums just for that immediate knowledge. I don't know much about overclocking a chip so seeing 4.5 instead of 4.8 just seemed like a tremendous drop but I will accept it as best decision based on stability. Nothing worse than a system that keeps locking up because of instability.

I can't really ask for the $69 back because they did OC it from 3.5GHZ to 4.5GHZ. I know I most likely won't see much difference but it was still a bit of a bummer.

Maybe I'll look into how to take it up to 4.6GHZ at some point but if DS didn't see a way to do it reliably then I'm concerned that I wouldn't be very successful at it.

I actually did a little research about overclocking this chip and this is what I read

"At 4.6 GHz, the voltage increase necessary to get our machine stable quickly resulted in throttling, forcing us to stay at 4.5 GHz."

Seems that once you get the voltage to a certain point the heat ramps up rather quickly and the chip automatically begins to throttle the speed to reduce the temps so unless you're being very aggressive with how you deal with heat (which I'm not) then 4.5 might be as high as I can safely go.

I read this in a Tomshardware article about overclocking this particular chip.

The Ivy Bridge chips are a completely different beast when overclocking than the previous Sandy Bridge chips.  The Ivy Bridge chips don't like voltage much but you can OC them at a lot lower voltage than what was used in Sandy Bridge.  Each chip reacts differently to OCing so one chip may have a higher stable OC than another.

I would not be concerned at all.  You have a great system on its way that should have ZERO issues running pretty much everything you throw at it.

Enjoy.

Yep, the difference in the oc'ing isn't a big deal, in my opinion.  I'd rather have more stability then a marginal increase in performance.

Thanks everyone. I knew I could count on you all to put my mind to rest. It's so easy to get caught up in this stuff and you start to lose focus on what's really important...stability so I can have FUN! Can't wait.

Hey John....when I first started out building machines, I was so hung up on benchmarks and tweaking. I never got around to playing the games. Now, I just do the usual generic tweaks to optimize Windows a bit, then leave it alone.

If your games are fluid and smooth....and the machine is stable, then life is good. Enjoy your beast when it gets there.

Thanks Bobby. Thankfully this panic attack didn't last too long. Just got the email today that my system is on it's way. Of course I was cheap and paid for ground so it'll be a week but it's all good. What to play first?!??!?!  lol
