Ok so first off let me say, my knowledge of all things computer is generally lacking. I know enough to get me by but the nuts and bolts... well that is why i order computers.
Here is my question: I have a computer right now, HP, 2.13 duo core intel processor, 4 ram, and a mobility radeon HD 4650 card
On the game I enjoy playing, Rift, I get decent FPS 20-30 when I am by myself leveling nicely BUT when too many ppl get together... I lag the heck out, easily down to 1 FPS.... very frustrating.
I am looking at a X17 with a qaud core 2.3 over clocked, with 8 ram, and a Geforce GT 555M 2g...
Will that actually get me better FPS, Because I look at notebookcheck.net(com) maybe and it only says that the function is maybe 20% better.... 20% sounds like nothing.
Any idea guys?

Hi mydrrin, welcome to the forum.
I don't know a lot about laptops other than I don't like them. If you want to really play games a Desktop is the best way to go. Are you sure you want a laptop? Frank |

We have some members with laptops and I am sure they will fill you in on their experience.

I'm sure someone will provide some valuable advice but I too, have steered away from laptops since I ordered a $3500 gaming laptop and it had heat issues from day one. When the GPU finally failed due to heat, I couldn't upgrade (form, fit, and function of manufacturer) and was stuck with replacing it with a GPU that was already failing to meet the day's recommended standards. These are hardcore FPS games though. I've never bought another gaming laptop since. Good luck!!!

So... lol.... Yeah, another question in addition to the above ( to which no one actually answered, lol) is whether the diamond compound that digital storm uses really helps. Cause i've had just a billion laptops overheat... Burns on my legs occasionally from the heat ( what can i say, I like the PVP more than I like my leg)...
So... Will it help with FPS a lot?

Well, like some people have said, if you want to game you really need a desktop. There is a market for people who have to use laptops, or want a laptop option for when they are not at home, but a desktop is going to trump a laptop in just about every aspect of gaming.
If you have to use a laptop look into things like powered cooling pads for the laptop to sit on instead of on your legs. Better yet a powered cooling pad used on a desk or table surface as heat will be your biggest enemy. There are plenty of good, budget friendly desktop options out there that will beat any laptop dollar for dollar in performance. The ODE Level has the best non-enthusiast CPU on the market right now and has the second best single GPU on the market, both of which will smoke your laptop in terms of performance. It also has double the RAM that your laptop does. Pair the ODE Level 1 with a 22 or 24 monitor and you'll get some great frame rates and very good settings in most games. |

i would imagine that anything is better then the stock compound... and if you want a laptop you should get a laptop, i game on a laptop and i love it, only had one issue with heat and that was because my fan was full of dog hair, stay in a well ventilated area and you'll be fine.

Hi There,
I only recently received my x17 Laptop (level 2 with the upgraded thermal compound and upgraded 750gb hd) so I might not be the best person to give you feedback on an x17 in the long term, but so far it's been great. My old laptop was an HP dv7t and it always had heat issues, even with a cooling stand. After barely any gaming that thing used to get so hot to the touch. The x17 is extremely quiet and cool. I haven't used my cooling stand with it yet. I kept all of my temperatures up on a second monitor while I was raiding in WoW the other night and nothing went above 62 in the 3 or so hours I was online. The keyboard area stayed cool to the touch and with almost everything turned to Ultra I was still getting a pretty solid 60 fps. I've never played Rift and I know WoW is not very graphically demanding, but I'm pretty sure this computer could do the job. When playing WoW it usually only needs to use 1 core so it could take a much worse beating. If I get a chance later I'll install a free trial of Rift and let you know what it's like. |

Oh, I also forgot to mention that I have vsync enabled in WoW, so the framerate doesn't go above 60 since it won't go higher than the refresh rate.
With vsync off it's around 80 - 105 fps (not like my eyes can tell the difference). |

Ok another question. Thanks guys for all the answers yet. Between my own research and your guys help I'm still gonna get a laptop...( it just fits my life right now)... I'm happily gonna get the 555M Geforce GT.
The question I have now is... Processor... And you know where this is going. Quad core vs Dual core Intel Core i7 2670QM (2.2 GHz Turbo Mode to 3.1Ghz) (Quad Core) (6MB Cache) vs Intel Core i5 2520M (2.5 GHz Turbo Mode to 3.2Ghz) (Dual Core) (3MB Cache) I know there is some way to differentiate which one I would need, but again I will defer to your knowledge and experience.

the processor that is stronger now, will feel stronger then the lesser one as time goes on, so if you want to own this laptop for a short time go with dual core, if you expect it to work for you for 3 years or longer go quad core.
also quad core = more multi tasking. |

Hey Mydrinn
I had a chance to install and test out Rift, but haven't quite found a large city. I cranked the settings up pretty high until I was at 20 fps almost all the time. I'm sure if I reduce them it will go up drastically. If you'd like to tell me what settings you use I can give them a shot on my machine. Here are my computer's specs as well as a link to a screenshot with my in game settings. Hopefully this helps make your decision easier. http://www.digitalstormonline.com/forums/uploads/7372/2011-11-01_175504_reduced.jpg Chassis Model: Digital Storm x17 Laptop (Model: 8170) Display: 17.3 Inch (16:9) (Resolution: 1920 x 1080) (Glossy Surface) LED-Backlit Display Processor: Intel Core i7 2760QM (2.4 GHz Turbo Mode to 3.5Ghz) (Quad Core) (6MB Cache) Thermal Compound: Premium IC Diamond CPU and GPU Thermal Compound (Reduces Thermal & Laptop Noise) <b></b> Memory: 8GB DDR3 1333MHz Primary Hard Drive: 750GB 7200RPM (SATA 3Gb/s) <b></b> Secondary Hard Drive: - No Thanks Optical Drive: DVD/CD 8x Multi-Drive (Writes and Reads DVDs, CDs) Wireless Card: 802.11 B/G/N Wireless LAN Module Video Card(s): NVIDIA GeForce GTX 560M 1.5GB Windows OS: Microsoft Windows 7 Home Premium (64-Bit Edition) Warranty Plan: Life-time Expert Customer Care with 3 Year Limited Warranty Edited by kandore - 07 Nov 2011 at 6:46pm |
