Looks like we could be seeing the AMD's mid range response to fermi next week with the 6870, and the 6850.  http://www.maximumpc.com/article/news/amd_hd_6870_and_6850_launch_date_nears

Seems like it was only yesterday we were waiting for the 5xxx series. Should be exciting to see how the 6870/6850 performs. Cayman too.

I don't like the naming of the new cards.. 6870 makes people think that it is the new high end single card,. going to confuse a lot of people.

no, it is a midrange card, the 6870 will not be faster than the 5870... hence the confusion

Yeah, were lookin at a 6890 or 6970 for the high end part possibly.  Lol what need was there for chaning this?  Also, I thought I remember reading somewhere that the 6870 the non-high end card was actually gonna be faster than the 480.  Idk.. lol, then again by looking at the suspected specs I doubt that.

well, it is only a week away. I heard through the grape vine that AMD sent out several fake new cards, all different, so that when they seen a 6XXX card posted online, they knew who was breaking NDA. Pretty amazing that a week out and we really don't know the perfromance.
But the best sources I know of, state it will not beat the 5870, but, the 6970 is ~30% faster than the GTX 480.
Without a die shrink, this will be just some new components, and some tweaking of the 5870, next gen will be a large gain in performance.
Overall, 2012 is shaping up to be a great year for performance PC's!!

Yeah that sounds great, but isn't the 6970 a bit more than just a bit of tweaking to the 5870?  I know there's no die shrink till 2011, but aren't they implementing a bit of their knew architecture on these new cards?

That is why I said  a bit of tweaking and some new components.
The 6870 is looking like a GTX 460 battle, but the 6870 seems like a fail, max of 2 cards, no tri or quad fire possible, 1Gb RAM..
one plus, it can do six monitors from only 2 display ports. Big%20Smile

If you look at the pics of the 6870 it only has one goldfinger, unlike most that have 2 sets, so max of 2 cards.Big%20Smile

Downright underhanded marketing.

The shoe seems to be on the other foot now. Previously Nvidia didn't meet their release time expectations with Fermi, and now AMD didn't meet their expectations with a die shrink for their 6000 line.

But instead of delaying the new line AMD has instead decided to push them out to consumers anyway with misleading model names to try to cover up their folly.

The die shrink is TSMC's fault, But this was known about a year ago, the 6000 series was not to be 32 NM, but the 7000 will be 28Nm, so that is on  track.

They are coming out with the 69XX series cards, with new arch, same 40Nm design, but will be faster than any card Nvidia has, or can do, on 40Nm with a single card.
The naming thing is a very poor idea, and many people are going to buy the 6870 thinking it is an upgrade to the 5870... Very poor idea

You beat me to posting the link! Lol I was coming right now to post it.  Also, this folly has nothing to do with AMD.  Like kerr said it is TSMC and this affects Nvidia as well if they were thinking about producing anything on a die shrink to 32nm, so none of the cards will come out with a 28nm card before each other because of this folly because it equally affects them both.  Also, these cards will be more powerful, just not the ones launching next week that are the upgrades to the 5700 series, I have no clue why they would want to confuse costumers and change the names this way...

This is very confusing but maybe that's what AMD is shooting for? People who do not actually read and follow will just see 6870 and think its automatically better than 5870. Maybe AMD thinks this will help sell some cards and just increase their market share.

The 6870 and 6850 are only intended to replace the 5700 series. So justin.kerr is spot on that a 6870 will not be faster/better than the 5870. Its better to wait until Cayman comes out which is slated for a Nov release with the 6970 and 6950. Will wait and see how those cards do, if not any better than Nvidia looks like I will just get the GTX 480 and call it a day.

They need to do some sticker replacing and rethink their naming scheme or they gonna get lambasted when people really catch on that they didn't buy a better 6870 than the 5870 lol.

I'm going to have a fun time correcting people the 68xx is not an upgrade of the 58xx. I guess those who don't keep informed just go by the next highest numbers and base their decisions on that. Not always the norm.
