Forgive me for asking a dumb question most likely but I'm wondering why the limit for RAM in the AMD builds is limited to 8GB while the Intel builds have a limit of 12GB? Is it because of motherboard restrictions? The Asus Crosshair IV Formula mobo for example can handle up to 16GB of RAM so I'm wondering why it's capped at 8GB? Thanks! :)

the more important question is what are you going to be doing that will be using all that RAM. if you're doing some 3D rendering and movie editing and photoshop you might use that much, but 6 GIG's is more than enough for any normal gaming set up.

It's a dual-channel versus triple-channel thing. Memory can be 1GB, 2GB, or 4GB per stick. That AMD ASUS motherboard has 4 memory slots, so 4 sticks of 4GB memory would max it out at 16GB. The Intel x58 platform is triple-channel so they have 6 memory slots, so with 4GB sticks they can max out at 24GB.
The problem is that 4GB sticks of memory are prohibitively expensive, around $150 for a single 4GB stick of 1600MHz memory. So DS only carries 1GB and 2GB sticks, and you'll max out at 8GB on dual-channel platforms and 12GB on triple-channel platforms using 2GB sticks. |
