The 9850 and 9950 BE are currently doing well with AMD chipsets 790FX / SB 750 as well as the 790GX / SB 750 combo. However, the new cpus coming out will be a step up and competitive with the core 2 intels. The hot cpu coming out soon is the Phenom II x4 940 BE 3.0 GHz. It has hit 3.8GHz on air in the wild (engineering prototype) and AMD claims they have gotten it to 4.0GHz on air. Early pricing online shows around $300 for the 940 BE. It is an AM2+ socket, so can run on current mobos. They have it scheduled to run on AM3 sockets when those mobos come out. Not sure if it can run out of the box on AM3 tho. Basically, I'd wait a few months at least. By 3rd quarter next year or end of year, it will be obvious as to how good the new cpus and mobos are. Due to finances, it works out for me as I won't be looking for a new pc till then. Star

3 grand will easily get you a kick butt system to last 5 year and the ability to upgrade to the next round of CPUs down the road.
