Ive seen some pretty amazing differences between the Intel native frequencies and the DS'd frequencies. But, what kind of performance leap could be expected from the Phenom?
I guess we'll assume im going with Stage 3 air cooling for price conservation, dual ati 3870s and 2gb of Corsair Dominator memory at 1066mhz on the Asus M3A32 MVP mobo. Should I just mosie over to Intel for this kind of thing? |

I am on the way out to work so I cant back this up right now but, I have read articles that showed that the phenoms both don't scale well with frequency, and dont overclock as well as C2D

The thing with Phenom processors, is they behave like I remember processors responding to overclocks. The current generation of Intel chips is blow-your-mind amazing in terms of how far past stock they can be pushed. Overclocks in excess of 30% are not uncommon. The Phenoms, even the black ed, on the other hand are looking at a ~10% increase over stock, and they start life slower than the Intel offerings.
For the time being, I think the only reason to go AMD, is if your sense of brand loyalty is enough to overcome the severe performance deficit between the two brands, or if you are looking to put together a very inexpensive PC. For the price range you're looking at, I would go with Intel, hands down. Edited by Tyler Lowe - 27 Feb 2008 at 10:59am |

This was very, very helpful Tyler, thanks. I probably will go with Intel, too. Cant beat the arguing power of power itself, I guess. |

I'm afraid that AMD chose to compete by lowering prices and clocking chips right to the ceiling. A fair enough tactic, but Intel is definitely the way to go.

The Only reason for me going with AMD 9600 from DS or 9700 if it will com out in april is that AMD has just pushed their new socket and Intel will be launching a new one in november......So for my computer to last the many years without getting a new MoBo is to do AMD slowness now and keep upgrading the CPU over the many years.
If I went with Intel ya I will have OC'ing and dominace in speed but my WALLET will be saying DEAR GAWD IM EMPTY. Upgrading the mobo and intel prices within one-2 years is GAWWWW I want 4-5 thx like with the one I have now. Its gone from 2.2 single to the FX-64 one one fun swoop 1gig to 3gig ram and an 4600ti to a 1950pro AGP SO for the next few years I will do it again AMD Upgrade-ability all the way to dead.

Thats exactly why I was thinking AMD, actually. But I wont even have the cash flow to be upgrading consistently. And if its going to be a year before they have AMDs at sufficient frequencies/prices then I could be better off with Intel. Im starting off with the 6600 anyway, if I do, and the current champions will be a decent upgrade for a decent price after a while. I dunno, the socket change though..... |

Anywho, doesnt it lead to reason that if Phenom doesnt overclock worth a fart now, that it wont be a great deal better later? At least before the AM3 socket change provides ppl the excuse to upgrade the cpu and the mobo anyway, and provides AMD with a cleaner outlook. i could be being dumb though.

Where did you hear about a new Intel socket type? I thought they were sticking with 775 for a good while longer. I know the chipset has changed, but I haven't heard anything about the actual socket type changing from 775.
