There it is. For $549 you can buy a reference card as of 5am (UTC -4) this morning that will beat the GTX Titan in nearly every since test and benchmark. It's officially the titan killer. Now to wait and see how it competes against the GTX 780ti. I have a feeling that once companies start releasing their own versions that aren't reference, the 290X will give the 780ti a solid run for it's money too. But regardless, for $549 you can buy a card that will be a GTX Titan. Of course good luck finding any in stock, as every place is sold out that I can find. But as soon as OC non reference versions come out, it'll be time for me to get a new tri xfire set up going. Edited by Meller - 24 Oct 2013 at 5:24am |

Maybe AMD is finally back in the game. Pricing you posted is real nice. Not much more than a Classified 770.

I am looking to see if DS offers these cards soon in systems.

They have the R9-280X, so my guess is they will.

For that pricing, it's crazy... and you figure that's just reference. So customer OEM OC will probably be in the $600 range... and I'm guessing the OC's will keep up with the 780ti's fine also. Looks like AMD just took the crown for the time being.

I was pretty impressed with the benchmarks. The few times Ive seen it being beaten by Titan/780 are when it starts to throttle at the 95C limit.
Im tossing around the ideas of doing a new build with a full cpu+gpu cooling loop, and would probably get a pair of these. Been a few years since I got my ODE, and I need something that can handle triple monitor gaming. |

The throttle at 95C is the issue we see as well.

No no no. People need not worry about the 95C. AMD has said multiple times, this card is designed to run optimally at that temp. 95C is a good temp for this card.

Even though AMD says it's safe at 95 ºC, it just seems like that's not good for it long term...

Its ok. Its not that AMD says its ok. AMD literally says that's the temp they designed it to actually run at.

Seems a little toasty to me also, but AMD does say its all good. Luckily for those that might get a little nervous, the CCC software does allow for adjusting the max temps, noise etc. I'm thinking that most gaming won't come close to the 95c.
Just have to make sure, if using the twin or tri fans, that the system can handle the heat. For most, not an issue, but something to consider. |

Makes you wonder how this will affect internal case temperatures as this card runs ~15 ºC hotter than the Titan to get same fps (80 vs 95 at max). All that heat has to go somewhere... Edited by fstcvc - 26 Oct 2013 at 9:40am |

Well, you probably won't be able to fit that big ole card into a smaller case, but that will won't be a problem. The current 290X's use reference blower type coolers. That means no hot air is being exhausted into the case.

The heat sink & cooler attached to the card will expel the heat up to the 95 ºC - if it was capable of removing more heat than that, the GPU wouldn't run at 95 ºC. The GPU itself is still running at 95 ºC which is inside the case meaning after a while the minimum temp inside the case will rise to match that. With smaller cases that have less than ideal airflow, like the Bolt, I don't even know if a card like this is even possible (without lowering it's temp limit).

Yeah AMD might say its fine for the card to run at 95C, but all that heat is either going a) into the case, heating up my other components, and b) into my room. Which in the summer time is no good.
I think with water cooling you could do some insane things with the 290x. I dont think I could see myself getting one/two without going that route; not a fan of my hardware purposefully being pushed into downclocking itself. Downclock should happen when you get to dangerous temps (which if im not mistaken is what some cards do now?); if 95C is a fine operating temp why the downclock? And if its not as fine as AMD says, thus the need for the downclock, why allow it to so easily hit that mark? Just sort of confused from an engineering standpoint. |

To be honest if the card as fine running at those temps then it makes you wonder why the card downclocks when it hits those temps.
I expect that better cooling will be the best thing for the chip and I would not touch one with a reference cooler at all. I would love to see what this chip can do assuming you can cool it enough to actually overclock. |
