I am trying to compare the probable real life performance of the following two GPU options: Dual 1280 MB Nvidia GTX 570 -vs- Dual 2 GB AMD Radion HD 6970. I don't know how to compare the specs. But I am really interested in which might be better in actual performance with the way I use a computer's GPU: 75% HD Video editing, 10 % Photoshopping still images, and 15% gaming.

well for gaming the 6970 is better. video/photoshop wise your better off with the nvidia card because you can use cuda to speed up rendering as well as watching the video before its edited. Ati/amd cards aren't supported for cuda encoding yet (and i don't think their architecture is good for that). But also remember to get cuda working you will have to google how to edit the files to support the 570, technically the only out of box supported gpu's for cuda in premire cs5 is the 480. Also dual gpu's don't mean anything except for gaming. Unless you are playing a game you will never use the second gpu.

Thank you -- I appreciate the last two sentences, and will have to decide how much gaming I am really going to do.
Now I am really going to reveal my ignorance: what is cuda? and how difficult for me would it be to edit the files to support it on the 570? I have been at computers since the mid 1980's, but once things got into windows and registers, and stuff like that, I just got lost unless I have a very clear set of editing instructions. Thank you in advance for any further advice you might give me. |

Cuda is basically premire cs5 support for speeding up rendering using the gpu as well as the cpu.
heres what it accelerates:

Really helpful! You are right -- unlocking the card does not seem difficult.
Thank you |

For gaming it depends on your res, both 570 or 6970 will do great in games at 1900 x 1200.
Max has provided the rest of the info. |

One more comparison question to Max and to DST4ME: Given that Max pointed out that I would not be using the second GPU except for gaming, and given the fact that far more of my time on this computer will be spent editing HD Videos than Gaming (although I still want to do some gaming) how would either of you compare the following for my own needs: the dual 570 card - vs - the EVGA Classified version of a single 3 GB GTX 590? How might the experience for gaming compare? As far as you know, would I be able to unlock cuda on the 590?
Thank you in advance for your help. |

Don't go with the 590, dual gpu cards are bad alltogether for gaming and especially for rendering. Dual gpu cards (like the 590) are basically 2 sli gpu's put in one giant card. Its not supported through cuda whatsoever because its 2 gpus. Honestly for what you are doing i'd stick with just one 570 since that will be great for gaming as well as rendering. If you do sli the second card will really be wasted unless your gaming. But it really depends on how much gaming you want to do.

Just to chime in, forget the 590 for the reasons max said, they run hotter and get beat by 2 single cards in sli.
