It's odd that it's writen like that. AM3 soket boards will suport AM3 and AM2+ chips. When they say 'Athlon' I think they mean 'Phenom'...as it the quad, tri, and dual core processors previous to the Phenom II's arrival.

I don't know about athlon, but the AM3 socket is only designed to accept AM3 cpus. They have a different pin layout from the AM2+ and actually have one less pin to prevent forced AM2+ processor insertion. The AM3 cpus are the only AMD processors with ddr3 integrated memory controller. Therefore, none of the other AMD cpus can run with AM3 sockets. However, the AM3 cpus are backward compatible and have a ddr2 integrated memory controller.
