i currently have an amd system but am looking to upgrade my system i am thinking i would like to stick with amd is this a smart choice?

Honestly, I wouldn't. With the release of the Core i5's, AMD is far behind. The cheapest Core i5 (the 750) is a $200 part and beats out AMD's most expensive part (Phenom II 965) which is $265.
By upgrade, I assume you mean buy a new one?
