its usefulness is varied. If you have a motherboard that does not have the extra Molex booster for the PCIe slots, and run more than 2 GPU's, then yes it could help.
I will give a short explanation.
The Modern, high end GPU derives its power from 2 spots.
1. the PCIe connectors from the power supply, usually either 6 pin, 8 pin, or a combination of them.
The other spot is from the PCIE slot itself. PCIE 2.0 spec's show that a maximum of 150 watts to be pulled from the PCIe slot.
This has been a problem for some GPU's, regulating where the power is pulled from, and then once you start to overclock the card, far enough, it is even more likely that the 150 watt maximum will be exceeded. The PCIe slots get their power from the 24 pin ATX connector on the motherboard, so say you have 4 overclocked GPU's, you could easily be pulling a ton of wattage, and the 24 pin ATX connector only has 2, 12V wires, for a maximum of ~200 watts.... lol so it should be easy to see why there can be problems.
I have seen the 24 pin connector melt before, due to way too much power being pulled off the PCIe slots.
the Evga boost deal should be able to add ~100 additional watts to the PCie slot power Edited by justin.kerr - 27 Jan 2011 at 4:16pm |
