Hi folks!
I'm "new" here.  Actually have been lurking, reading, learning, and DROOLING over the machines and configs I see.  Of course, I'm astounded by it all and totally impressed.  I need to buy a machine which will see some gaming now and then - son and granddaughter - but mostly I need a monster for video editing, Maya, Flash, Poser Pro, Vue, Carrara, Adobe Illustrator, InDesign, Photoshop and a host of other such.  I have a lot of high resolution graphics to create, render, and then tweak, edit, and otherwise manipulate and I need to have it get done, not just creep along.

I will buy likely 2 machines, one so my son can assist as well, but first I will just get one to start.  Looking at the builds of some specials I made a few changes to one of them - actually a couple, but just one here to start.

This is not the top end of my budget yet, but just getting my feet wet, so to speak.

Your feed back yea or nay - especially the nay - will be greatly appreciated and just want to acknowledge my appreciation of the experience, knowledge and ENERGY I've seen here while lurking the last few weeks.  Glad to "meetcha!"

the first question that needs to be answered is do you have a top end for your budget? with a final number in mind it will be easier to create a build to get the best bang for your buck Big%20Smile

Hi rholyrag!  Two choices in monitor but changeable:
A Samsung 22" LCD flat screen (1920x1080) and
Viewsonic 22" widescreen (1680x1050).

Still looking around at this and other things because I love to shop (and buy)!  Open to suggestions.  Thanks for replying.Big%20Smile

Hi teaiewold!
Thanks for replying.  I have budgeted for 2 machines but I'm buying only 1 right now.  For the first I'm looking at a top end circa $2500-$2800 and, depending on how that 1 works out, very similar +/- a few $100 for the 2nd.

BTW, the main reason I've chosen digitalstorm is what I see about the product testing and after purchase care. AND, I'm very receptive of good suggestions.

Thanks again!

Have to post notes separately due to Black Hole of Calcutta at bottom of long posts.

The Haf 932 is the best air cooled case here, and cheaper, too.

12 gb RAM for the intensive video wor and rendering... you'll use it.

The SSD is in the budget, and should do very well for your use. All you pu on there is your OS and your apps. The larger HDD is for the size files you're going to generate. Feel free to increase as needed.

The gtx 480 is for that HD monitor for the best performance at that res.

Must have better CPU cooler for the overclock. The Noctuas here are top end, high perforrmance heatsink/dual fan coolers that are nearly silent. You definitely want the overclock as it is mild for these chips, but take a $280 chip and make it a $1000+ chip with complete stability and reliability. For free!

Get case light...or not. Get a free t-shirt! Upgrade your warranty.
Hope this helps.

Hi Cretae!
That looks pretty good!  That 12GB memory jumps out too!  You know, I have been looking at SSDs!  I was looking at SSDs but have read a lot of stuff about price, value, worth ratios, i.e., value will increase and price will decrease in a few months, and for the necessary other drive a 1 TB but had been leaning - more or less arbitrarily - toward Western Digital instead of the Seagate you list.  Any further input on that, your choice versus mine?  Have had about the same experience with both over the years.

Also, my house can get hot - Sacramento - and heat has been an issue.  Sufficient with the Noctua dual 120mm and should I consider perhaps also something more for the HDDs?  Perhaps upgrade the "Standard Chassis Airflow Fans?"

Also, worth it to throw in a surge shield as well, do you think?

THANK you for your input, Cretae!  It is greatly appreciated.

Hi again!  Looks like we cross posted.  You did answer a question I had about the Noctuas - near the end of my post.

Also, I've read a good deal about overclocking over the last few months!  So, you think I CAN go with them - Noctuas - and that will be sufficient even in an environment tending more toward the warm? Also, I thoroughly agree about the HAF 932, from what I've read - and I read a lot - LOL!  For one thing, I do proofreading and editing for $$$!

Will look more closely at the warranty!  Thank you again, Cretae!

With all that heavy graphics work, you may want to consider an IPS panel like the HP ZR24w or the Dell U2410.  IPS panels are recommended for graphics professionals.  I'm no pro, but I like the 1920x1200 res vs. 1920x1080, so I'm leaning towards the HP myself.

Hi Section9!
Yes, I've read about both of those and they're probably desired over what I have and a coin flip between the 2.  I'll probably do something else in that regard sooner or later (soonest actually).  Need to do more research after getting ordering system (read SHOPPING).

Thank you!

Nice handle BTW, Section9.

Lot of folks want to have every game in their library on an SSD, which is just an overreach IMO. The 40 is $138 and will knock your socks off performance -wise. Talking boot times 10-12 seconds. You won't shave much off that with a next gen, and the cost won't moderate all that much either at that price. I was thinking that your video softwares would get a real boost from an SSD.

I agree on the HDD. I would like the Caviar Black, myself. Wasn't offered when I got mine. The 40g SSD wasn't offered either, darn it! The big boost in performance comes from 16mb cache to 32mb cache. 64mb cache is not that much of a boost, but it's pretty cheap.  I just put the generic because I didn't want to spend your $!

I live in Florida, and I have the Noctua Dual. Running 44C atm. If you go with any of the high air flow cases, you don't need extra cooling. In fact, I question changing the airflow patterns engineered into these cases. Might do more harm than good. Those add-on fans make noise btw.

I think surge protection is a good idea here in the lightning capitol of the world, (Tampa Bay) but I went shopping for that.

Excellent to know!  I MIGHT want to get a bigger SSD because I have a LOT of software and tend to buy more.  Plus a concern is all that S/W and the OS ballooning up over time but that boot time just makes me SLOBBER I have to tell you.

So you definitely know what I'm talking about with humidity plus!  Not yet convinced no add-ons are not needed, but can always add on later!

Thank you, Cretae!
