Topic: Another "Should I Upgrade or Buy New" Thread Posted: 19 Aug 2020 at 3:32pm |
Hi everyone,
I bought my current PC from DS around 2013, and have only added new memory, a SSD and graphics card over the years. It's used primarily for gaming and is starting to chug on a few high-end titles (Microsoft Flight Simulator 2020 is having trouble keeping the frame rate up at high settings). So I'm pondering if I should upgrade the graphics card again, or if it's time to just buy new. My biggest concern is the motherboard may be due for an upgrade, and I'm not confident I have the skills to do that myself. My current configuration is... Windows 10 (64-bit) Intel i7-2600k CPU @3.40GHz Motherboard: Asus P8Z68-V LE GTX 1080 ti 16GB RAM, Corsair CML8GX3M2A1600C9 Vengeance 8GB (4x4GB) DDR3 1600 MHz (PC3 12800) What are your thoughts? If I buy new, I may try and use my current 1080ti graphics card... unless it's better to just buy the whole thing new. What are your thoughts? Thanks! |

Welcome back. That gpu is still very good and I would transfer to a new system. Your main components (cpu and RAM) are past due and although will perform for many years you are already experiencing their shortcomings as far as gaming is concerned. You can order a system with no gpu or a low end gpu (and transfer to the old system and pass on) and install the 1080Ti. What resolution (monitor's) are you using?

Nice. That gpu must really be working! The new gpus (both AMD and NVIDIA) will be coming out in Sept. I would wait to see what the market (prices) does once they are out. Good luck. The Smart Guys should come by and advise what would work best for you.

I agree that GPU is still a very powerful card, and could well be used as the focus of a new system. There isn't anything reasonably price ATM that would be worth a switch.
