A comment EdH63 made in the Crysis thread on the FPS forum made me curious about what the general consensus is about AA.

Ed mentioned that he has AA off as enabling any AA mode in Crysis "makes things worse." I personally don't put AA very high on my list of priorities for gaming graphics at all anyway.

In comparison shots, I seldom see a striking difference in image quality. I understand what it does, obviously, but almost every single time I would much rather have a higher resolution or higher quality settings than AA, unless my computer is already running the software at FPS where it makes no difference if there is an impact on performance.

For instance, running HL2 on my new DSO system, I consistently get framerates anywhere between 200-300 FPS - so it doesn't matter. But running Oblivion with modded textures and view distance, and with ultra high settings, sometimes it crawls to the 20s-30s, or worse. I would much rather have eye candy turned up than enable any AA at the expense of other settings. I imagine it would be the same if I installed Crysis.

Do any of you guys want to weigh in on this?

Chris

Oblivion is just brutal on the system.  It's quite the same for me.

AA always seemed to me to have more of an impact at low resolutions. Back when 1024x768 was buff, I was playing at 640x480, or 800x600 if the game wasn't top notch.

the added lines of 1280, 1600, 2048, etc seem to make AA less of a necessity for smoothing out the images and improvong quality.

What I've actually been trusting are the default settings according to how the game reads your system.  Typically, if you have a high end system, the game will automatically set your settings to the highest and adjust AA accordingly.  Crysis is no different.  It set AA to 0, but I tried other settings, actually every one available, so I could see if I was missing anything.  In my tests, I found that the higher AA setting just created more staggering and glitching.

I agree with you, thecomplex, I don't see AA as a huge priority either.  I would recommend that everyone play with every combination of settings on the demo to find where your specific system operates at its peak.  It's a little time consuming, but for this game specifically, I think it's key to knowing how to evaluate your systems performance before making claims that your system won't run Crysis well.

One of the trick boxes we can get ourselves into is assuming certain things before we've tested all the options.  Crysis is one of those games where you need to be thorough in your evaluations before making your assesment.

67alecto has a point. AA is really only useful at lower resolutions. I suppose there isn't as much to smooth out if you're running at a higher res. That's always been my experience as well.

I've always beleived (or at least hoped) that AA wasnt' as noticeable on CRTs either. A CRT's analog pixels bleed together a bit anyway.

Ditto.  Although, I can usually tell when AA is and isn't being used, what level it's at, even at 2560x1600.  I can live with it off, though.

I noticed a pretty substantial difference with 2x AA enabled on the Crysis demo at medium settings.

I normally play at 1024x768, which is fine for the size and quality level of my monitor. I noticed no significant impact on performance with a 2x setting enabled, but 4x started to bog things down and offered no real improvement over the 2x setting.

I think it varies from app to app what the "best" combination of settings is for each hardware configuration. Unless you're blessed with a machine that can mow down any setting on any app out there today, there needs to be a comprimise struck between playability and appearance. Tweeking to achieve what is best for your own preferences may be a pain, but to me, it's worth going beyond automatically detected "optimal" settings to find what works best.
