    Posted: 02 Jun 2009 at 7:41pm
I'm contemplating installing Ad-Aware anti-spyware/malware and CC Cleaner registry cleaner on my new DS rig.  I have a couple of questions:

- Will either of these programs run in the background and impede gaming performance on such a high-performance system?  I doubt it but just in case...

- Is a registry cleaner necessary/desirable?  There's a guy on another web site who warned me to stay away, says that one mistaken registry file removal will disable the OS and force reinstallation.  How big a risk is this?

- Does anyone recommend these products?  Is there any reason not to install them on a gaming PC?

Thanks!

cc cleaner is good
you dont need to run it in background, it takes only a few minutes to clear up your PC

CCleaner is the best for cleaning it does, but leave your registry alone.

as for anti spyware, either get spysweeper or don't waste your time

Eset will catch viruses and such, but when it comes to anti spyware, spysweeper is best, it has zero false positives and does a great job of catching things.

registry cleaning is done by av only if its infected.

I didn't know that.  I thought that ESET had some kind spyware on it.  Are spysweeper and ESET compatible?

I am using Spy Sweeper and it as good program.  I also use RegVac Registry Cleaner and have used the full version for years, and it too works great.  DST4ME is right, be very careful when messing with registry cleaners.  They can get you in a a lot of trouble, however, RegVac came highly recommended years ago and I have never had any issue with it cleaning the registry.  It only removes safe items and gives you the options to remove other items peice by peice.  It identifies safe, caution and unsafe by color codes (red, green, yellow).  I also use A1 Ultra PC Cleaner (full version) and have been for years.  Both very good programs that have served me well over the years.  SpyBot Search & Destroy and CCleaner are good ones I've been using also like others.

Okay, by registry cleaners what do you mean exactly?  Like deleting cookies, tracking websites type stuff.  I guess there is alot more programs to consider than what i thought.  I am looking at ESET as doing most of the watching over my computer.  I don't know if thats a good idea or not.  Do i need more?

eset will do most of the stuff for you, spysweeper is for certain spyware that anti viruses don't catch.

the registry is a part of windows, its where windows stores the patch to everything, one wrong move in there and your windows can be come corrupt.

Not quite. The registry tells windows how and what and when to talk to things. Mess up the registry and it may forget how to talk to the hard drive, what a network port is, or when to stop thinking about a program. None of which are good.

It is your choice not to clean your registry, but over time it can become bogged down with a lot of junk.  It is good to clean it every now and then and there are safe cleaners that can do it, as in RegVac.  I have no vested interest in this program other than it is a great and safe program to do the job.  All I can do is give my personal testimony on this specific program and my experience with it, and it does a great job removing junk that builds up over time in the registry that will slow down your system ultimately.  Of course, there are risks in any software you decide to incorporate into your system to monitor, clean and manipulate while processing a function.  Registry however is a very unique area and can absolutely present some very unique problems if things go wrong.  The nice thing about most registry cleaners is that they have back-up and save functions so you can restore your system.  The key is to be careful and pay attention to what you're doing.  RegVac is dummy-proof and it's very hard to get yourself in trouble with it.

Thanks for the info guys.  It sounds like you could wreck you computer if you don't know what your doing.  I am not computer savvy enough to mess around with the registry.  When your running this RegVac or any other cleaner, how does it know or how do you know what to get rid of?

If it didn't, they wouldn't be offering it. Most of the time the registry gets bogged down with old file extensions or uninstalled app links and junk like that. Most registry cleaners know to leave out windows component files or active linked files.

I cannot recommend doing anything in the registry manually without knowing exactly what you're looking at. There are hundreds if not thousands of entries and even one misstep can be disastrous. Though if you absolutely have to, I'm pretty sure you'll want the registry editor.. which is gotten to by typing "regedit" in the Run box gotten from the Start menu.

As satsunada stated, the cleaner by default is set to clean non-Windows entries.  That's why I said it really is dummy-proof.  Now, you can go into the settings and manually remove entries (not recommended) but it sets itself to a Novice mode by default and one click starts the process.  It runs and completes and shows you all the entries it removed.  Again, I've been using this software for years now and I have it on my wife's 64 bit Vista system.  I run them once a month and have never had it remove anything Windows related.  I believe the program is around $29.00 for the full version.

guys don't mess with your registry if you don't know what you are doing, unless you want to be stuck with a none working copy of windows.

anytime you are in the registry you have to remember the 3 rules of registry.

rule #1: back up registry before you do anything.

rule #2: back up registry before you do anything.

rule #3: back up registry before you do anything.

Good example. I just cleaned my registry with a little freeware program i've had for a while and it popped up 414 registry errors (mostly empty file extensions) that i've built up in the past 2 weeks ( i check once a month ). So ya, for some it can be a hassle to have a clogged registry.Censored

nothing but your cpu will make a difference in pc speed.

lot of times you don't know you messed up anything till you go to install a particulr app or and update or a patch.

PC speed? No. Windows speed, meh.. not really... now, when I first ran this program a while back and it picked up over 3700 bad entries.. that's a whole different story. It was like I did a reinstall or something. :P
It's kinda like your heart and arteries.. The heart pretty much always runs the same speeds, however clog the arteries and stuff starts to drag. Really though, you don't need to clean very often if you don't install and uninstall stuff constantly ( like i do ).
