i've used Norton anti-virus before and stuck with it. however, for a DS gaming pc, i'm starting to think Norton will not be good enough.
i don't visit porn sites. i mostly surf, play games (once my DS pc arrives), and listen to LOTS of music via iTunes. which anti-virus software do you recommend and adware/spyware software? i definitely want my DS pc protected from viruses and hackers. thanks !! |

it's b/c i saw another forum talking about other anti-virus softwares that i've never heard of. this led me to believe otherwise of Norton.

I've been using Norton Internet Security 2010 for about a month (after issues I had with BitDefender when I went to Win7). No issues at all and I don't notice any performance degradation. It is so much better than Norton was 2-3 years ago. IMO no need to switch unless you experience issues.

For me, I rather go with a company that has been good thru out the years and not one that just this year started being good, how do I know next year it won't go to hell again?
but thats just me. |

I'm on Norton Internet Security 09, and it's fantastic. But still, I'd recommend Microsoft Security Essentials, since it's free. I know I'm going to do that as soon as my Norton license expires..

try eset gringo, I don't recommend freeware security software to anybody, and I own a freeware site, when it comes to security software always go with paid versions.
try eset free for 30 days before you try anything else |

I'd go with Bitdefender if you're really into security. (Uses more resources)
Eset is ranked pretty high in my opinion as well. (Uses very little resources) Norton is just a big hog on resources and will actually bog down your machine. Doesn't matter how powerful it is. I learned that the hard way. |

I was using BitDefender until my switch to Win7. The realtime protection keeping stopping after I went from Vista to Win7 (two machines same thing). Customer Support was not much help so I switched to Norton. I've heard a lot of people say Norton 360 is a hog; but have found no issues with the Internet Security 2010. I agree on Eset; very good; just did not have some of the other features I want. |

I did not see some of the parental control features that Norton and B/D have. For example the ability to prevent certain words from being transmitted (e.g. name, phone number, address, etc). As I have two pre-teens I want to block that info from going from their PC. A few months I got a call from a car dealer when my oldest inquired about a car and gave our phone number over the web. And I'd rather have that in a "suite" rather than separate products. |

you are right it does not have parental controls. but that is not usually a part of any firewall.

New user, first post... been lurking for a few days.
I've used a ton of antivirus for many years...(I even had a virus 'farm' for a while for the fun of it and to test antivirus and cleaning techniques) and I agree with DST4ME, going for a paid version is the cheapest and most effective route when your time starts to become valuable. Norton, B/D, Eset, Avira, etc they are all good. Personally, I lean towards B/D (2009+ for XP, 2010 for W7), for my needs it strikes a good balance between price, features and performance, PLUS it has a gaming mode that comes very handy when you really need that extra oomph. Transitioning between XP and 7 can be a little time consuming if you don't read directions. Simplest course of action: - Clean install of Windows 7, install B/D 2010, you'll have no problem with that. - If you go the Windows upgrade route: then you should completely uninstall B/D BEFORE you upgrade to 7, turn on MS antivirus suite, upgrade to 7, do all the post upgrade activities, then install B/D 2010 BTW, if you have a 2009 license when you move to W7 they upgrade you to 2010 for free Finally: Antivirus is not the final answer, you should regularly use other tools (but not active antivirus): CCleaner, Highjack This, Supera, Malwarebytes, MGTools, etc are good to have in your tool belt. |

I will go ahead and disagree, with DonSasquatcho, all you need is a good anti virus and one proper anti malware like spysweeper, tho malwarebytes is a good one also, but I trust spysweeper due the my own testings, and good firewall, and the last but most important thing you need is commonsense, without commonsense all the tools in the world won't matter.

Kaspersky FTW, it's one of the best AV's around. Asus bundles it with their Republic Of Gamers and P6T series motherboards, and if your one of those paranoid types have a look at this: http://www.av-comparatives.org/images/stories/test/dyn/dynamic2009.pdf
I ran Kaspersky on my P4 2.4 ghz home pc with 1 gig of RAM for the past year and had no issues with it at all. And I only switched to NOD32 because I got a 1/2 year subscription for free. Edited by sirsiddius - 31 Dec 2009 at 4:25am |

o.k.
I can resist joining this....
If I was a new user, I would make sure my router had the tightest settings
and run either ESET or the new Microsoft antivirus+firewall.
This assumes you are not doing any naughty surfing.
I have 12 p.c.'s (going onto 13 thanks to DS) and all are running
Outpost Security Suite which includes firewall/antivirus/malware.
I got a lifetime upgrade license for unlimited number of machines for
$39.95 US.
They almost always are in the top 3 of all UNBIASED reviews.
But any software thank consistently ranks in the top is o.k.
assuming you are not a naughty boy or communicate regularly with
Nigerian royalty.

This is probably not healthy for me, but did anyone else laugh maniacally when seeing that attempted terrorist guy was Nigerian? I'm not sure what hit me, but the processes in my brain for A+B=C either told me it was fake news because it's on the internet and involves Nigeria... or this was the lone Nigerian guy actually trying for YEARS with emails who was honestly trying to save his money by giving it someone and he'd just had enough...
To return to OP, ESET is good... |

Have any of you ever used Webroot Antivirus? If so, how did that go? What about Avira?
Overall I was thinking of going with this security set up: Comodo Firewall Then Either: Avira Antivirus and malwarebytes or spysweeper or Webroot Antivirus/antispyware (spysweeper) combo I have a feeling I am splitting hairs here and that after the million reviews and recommendations that I have read, that either set up is fine. My surfing habits are about as safe as one can get, and my main concern/want is strong and solid security that does not bog down my PC. I don't need many bells and whistles in my software, I just need it to work and on top of new infections. Thanks |

For me... you get what you pay for. ESET isnt all that much per year(about 1 new game or less than half of a MMORPG subscription) I use it because it has a low profile, installs easy and is very secure. It doesnt take up much resources either (about 51MB of RAM) so for me its a easy choice.
What you buy or dont is up to you. ANY protection is better than none but AV/FW's that are "free" make me nervous...

I agree with the idea of "you get what you pay for." If I did not subscribe to that, I would not buy my PCs from DS. Nothing wrong with spending money, as long as you are getting value for the dollars you spend. I've used Comodo security suite for a while now, but I like to change up things every now and then. To be honest I am leaning more and more to Webroot AV and spysweeper as a package, and using Comodo's FW. I have only found one site that did not give webroot a glowing review. Has anyone here though used webroot AV? If so, mind sharing your thoughts? thanks. |

webroots's spysweeper is the best anti spyware, but its av is not the best.
for best setup, go with eset for av and firewall and SS for anti spyware, done. I'm a big fan of spysweeper and you will see me recommend it all the time, but its av is not as good and not as light as eset. |

The idea of a nice light, resource reduced, and yet powerful security package is very intriguing. I also like to get suites because I feel that the multi-layers of security would work hand in hand better. This of course might be totally mental, and have no physical evidence to back up. So I am very interested in trying out this ESET package. I could go on and keep repeating myself for days. basically I have my info and data, and I have researched this to death. I just now have to consider the pros and cons and just make a decision. No matter the decision, I plan on using the free trials for the software so I can evaluate them in the 1st month of operation. Overall, this is not a life or death decision, but it is an important one. Thanks all for comments. |

multi layer secturity does not provide better security, you are right its in your head.
for av and firewall eset is one of the best, defiantly very light and quick, it has an anti spyware also but as I mentioned nobody does the anti spyware as good as spysweeper, so for that reason I recommend and use eset and SS, but keep in mind 90% of security is commonsense, these apps only help you 10% and even then if you don't use them right they can't help. for example a good av or spysweeper are no good if their definitions are not updated regulary. if you open a downloaded file without scanning it or ignoring a warring from ss or eset then they can't help you there either. good luck also be careful reading reviews, most are full of crap if you ask me. |

I use Kaspersky but i'll be taking DST4ME advice and trying ESET as soon as my darned comp arrives (GRR STAGE 6!)
I also use Ad-Aware though. I'm really suprised no one has mentioned this. I use the payed for version that monitors processes and blocks IP addresses etc and I've always really liked it. Anyone have any opinions or info on Ad-Aware they'd like to shed? |

in my tests against SS, adaware did not do well, my top 2 where spysweeper and malwarebytes, they both pickedup stuff others did not, including adaware.

ESET is the best anti virus and malware detector I have ever used. Reason? It doesn't screw with my games. It is quite a powerful protector whilst using very little system resources. I have used this for about 3 years now with no trouble from its makers or new games as they come out.
Main point with this: It doesn't slow down you're rig. |
