I have used avast and avg though I personally like avast better. You are provided with a registration key for avast that you can type in and get the full program. I've read that avast is slighter more popular and more highly rated then avg. Either of them are fine though so you choose whichever one you like.

If your AV isn't automatically scanning your download when it's written to your drive then your AV isn't doing the job it should. Archive files included.
Also, I highly recommend running an adware/spyware scanner at least every 30 days. The spyware detection included in almost all AV products is far from ideal, you'd be surprised how much they miss. I seem to have the best luck with SuperAntiSpyware, though if you suspect an infection best to run at least 2 different spyware scanners in succession. Edited by StLBluesFan - 15 Jan 2009 at 2:10pm |

I Use Norton Internet Security 2009, rated very well and faster than just about everyone. Only DST's fave eSet hovered in the same neighborhood speedwise. NIS won about half and eSet won the other half of the speed tests.
NIS is very small footprint, under 10 Meg when on demand scanning and about twice that when it is in idle scan mode and scanning your whole PC for viruses. I also use Spybot S&D for extra spyware control as I find that as others have said, spyware is sneaky and many A/V packages are not optimal when scanning for spyware. I also use a utility I love called WinPatrol. it sits in the background and monitors your system for suspicious actions like installers that add startup keys, web pages that try to alter internet settings, new hidden files, all kinds of little gems that malicious software tries to do to your system. It also lets you edit your startup programs, delay start on programs to improve boot up times, alot of cool stuff. I highly reccomend it.
