I noticed that my i7 2600k's are running @ 4500mhz 100% of the time. No clocking down while idle. I looked in the BIOS and the Intel speedstep is disabled. I decided to leave it that way in case it's needed for stable overclocking.

Does anyone know if keeping the CPUs max clocked at all times is required?

with sandy bridge leaving eist(speeed step) on and making sure c1e is set to enable(theres some bug where auto will be off more times than none) there is no harm in letting the processor clock down to 1.6ghz it shaves a few C's off the idle temps. How is your processor overclocked manual voltage or offset?

speedstep is a bit buggy you will find most oc experts tell you to leave it off for that reason, but its not buggy for everybody and if it does not cause problems as rice said it won't hurt anything.

as long as your vcore is below 1.4 you can run that sucker all day long for many many years to come.

VCore is set to 1.350V in the BIOS.

OK, I enabled C1E, C3/C6, and EIST, so let's see if that's stable. Made it through 5min of Prime95 plus 10min of BF:BC2, so I'll leave it unless I see any crashes. Running idle @ 1600mhz should blow less power than @ 4500mhz.

Vcore=1.4V is the magic value where your CPU longevity is shortened?

1.4 is the start of redline if cpu is going to be on it 24/7, and at 24/7 use it will shorten the life of cpu, at 1.5 your cpu will die within a year or so.

you really need some more time to consider it "stable"(digital storm did a ton of testing so imo you dont really need to do a full retest) but you really don't see the same stability issues you had with 1366 with eist on. 1.4 and lower is a safe bet.

My PC is only on when I use it, which is perhaps 3-4 hours a day, depending on the day.

Rice, what did you mean about 1366?

your comp will last for a long long time if its only on a few hours a day. By 1366 i mean last generations high end ie. the i7 900's

So far steady throughout the day. Now I idle at ~9W now, which is pretty sweet. I show max 90W, which is pretty impressive considering the 2600k @ 3400mhz stock is rated at TDP of 95W. Since I'm overclocked to 4500mhz, this thing should max at >100W I'm thinking...

just because its showing 4.5ghz doesnt mean its at 100% load. everything is cool.
