Hello,
I'm about to take the plunge on this setup. Hopefully can get the Black Friday pricing on Cyber Monday? Having some Probs at the last minute getting the funding into bank account due to Thanksgiving weekend.
This setup will be primarily for Photo processing using Adobe CS3 & Lightroom and AVCHD Vid editing. Possibly SOME gaming, but not much.
I'm at my very limit on budget with this rig. My main consideration is a high quality rig with longevity. Hopefully at least five years, with of course some upgrading as I can afford it.
My personal thoughts on choice of the gear in this rig:
Case: Chose DS Hailstorm for expandability and love the SATA hotswap bays! I tend to collect a lot of drives over time. MANY, MANY, photos and HD vid sucks up lots of drive space.
MB: Chose the EVGA X58 3X SLI over the EVGA X58 LE cause I would like to have the IDE ATA 133 connection as I have a ton of ATA 133 drives that I would like to be able to use with an ICY DOCK MB123AK-B if possible. Will add dock myself. Will this dock fit OK in case? Anyone have a better idea or option.
Find ATA Dock here at Newegg: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817186004&Tpk=ata%20133%20dock
Graph card: Was suggested by Sarah of DS, and I like the reviews I've read on it. Is it worth OC on the card even if free under Black Friday? Again not gaming much and more concerned about longevity.
CPU cooling: Chose Noctua Dual 120mm after reading comments here. Will it play nice with the MB as far as clearance?
OS: Anyone have any comments on Win 7 Ultimate Vs. Professional?
Any other suggestions or thoughts on my config? Anything I might wish to reconsider or I might wish were different in the future? Again, I am against the wall on my budget, and as with everyone else, trying to get the most bang for the buck!
Thanks!

I like the hotswap cause I have many drives also and most importantly, when I clone, I can quickly check and make sure the clone is working with great ease. Also I'm getting an icydock product also, but not sure which yet. I was gonna get an external hotswap multi hdd external. You have a need for ide so looks like you are getting the single hotswap bay, I think it will be fine. But the reviews on newegg are not very promising. please make the changes I made, and think about what I mentioned about the 5870. get the office 2007 from newegg, Ithink you will get better prices. if you don't see yourself ever going tri sli on gpus, then all you need is a 750w corsair psu, make sure your psu is corsair at all times, pc power and cooling is good also. go ssd if you can or veloci atleast. I say go win7 pro, unless you have needs for encrypting and such. Edited by DST4ME - 29 Nov 2009 at 7:44am |
