Is there really that much difference in performance between the 965 and the 975 that makes it worth the $400 price difference? also i hear a lot of people saying the killer xeno is pointless is this true? Why is it pointless? For ram obviously 1866 isnt quite as good as 2000 mhz but how big of a difference are we talking? Would this sort of build need a 1200w power supply or would a 1000w do just fine? What exactly does nvidia ESA allow me to do? Is it worth it or should i just put a fan control in? Im sure i will come up with a few more questions before i order. Thank you for the help. MR2 Horrell

One more question for now. Is this a good monitor to compliment this computer? ASUS VK266H Black 25.5" 2ms(GTG) HDMI Widescreen LCD Monitor w/ Built in Speakers 300 cd/m2 1000:1 (ASCR 20000:1 ). If not can i get a few suggestions of one around the same price/size that is better. I know its kinda dumb but i do like the built in webcam 1 less thing to clutter my desk and such. Once again advice and suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks,
MR2 Horrell

You can see for yourself if the cost difference between the i7 965 and 975 is worth it:
http://www.guru3d.com/article/core-i7-975-review/1 http://www.pcper.com/article.php?aid=722&type=expert&pid=7 You won't notice any real world performance gains between 1866MHz and 2000MHz RAM. Nvidia ESA lets you monitor your computer hardware's temperatures and other stuff. But don't bother with it as it is a dead standard. Even Nvidia themselves stopped supporting it, quite ironic. You probably could save some money and just go with 2x GTX 275 as you don't need 2x GTX 295 for 1920x1200 resolution. And I'd suggest a solid state disk over a raptor drive if you want performance. Don't waste money on the killer xenos. It's just a $100 paperweight. Everyone that has high-end PCs should be able to afford a cable or fiber connection. The VK266H is a decent monitor for gaming and general computer tasks. Edited by skyR - 09 Aug 2009 at 1:50pm |

skyR is right, the only thing is that the 975 will run cooler then 965, what is your ticket number?

Awsome info so far thanks.
ok so i do like the 975 i think i will stick with that even at the higher cost
will go with the 1866 ram
will get rid of nvidia ESA and replace it with the NZXT sentry
what sort of performance differences are we talking between the 275s and the 295s or is it really just a matter of the 275 is enough for the resolution for the monitor where the 295 would just be unused power?
also will get rid of the killer xeno but what should i put in its place? (d-link , linksys, nothing?)
this is probably a really dumb question but is solid state really that much better i mean im not about to spend nearly a grand on just my hard drive so that pretty much only leaves me with putting in the 120 gig one is it that much better then the raptor? lol ya that probably sounds like a complete newb question but hey i am trying to learn this stuff lol.
is mcafee any good? or should i just get it with out and add my own virus software? (if so what should i get?)
thanks again guys i really appreciate the help
and here is the new setup

ok so i guess i could go with the 256 solid state which would put me right at 8 grand which is fine so i will probably do that but whats the difference between the vertex series and the solid state drives?

I like to pointout that unless you specifically request the front fan to be changed, it will stay red, the fan upgrade does not include that fan. also with dual loop and an i7 975, you don't need fan upgrade or the the lcd temp control, drop them if you ask me. If I were you I would drop the paint also, but thats a personal choice, thats just me. Edited by DST4ME - 09 Aug 2009 at 6:58pm |

Your storage choice honestly depends on the tasks you going to be doing and personal preference. Like personally I'd think raptors themselves are a waste but many people don't. If you're just going to be gaming and nothing else, I don't think SSDs are needed. Here's a review for you to decide yourself:
http://pcper.com/article.php?aid=750&type=expert&pid=1 The GTX 295 has 2 GPUs on one card so by getting 2x GTX 295, you basically have 4 GPUs. That kind of power isn't necessary unless you are using a 30" monitor. The GTX 275 is basically what makes up the GTX 295. So buying two GTX 275, you basically have a better performing GTX 295. Ya I know it's confusing and I'm bad at explaining. You can see the performance of the two cards here: http://www.guru3d.com/article/inno3d-geforce-gtx-295-platinum-review-test/12 Don't get mcafee, it's a resource hog =p If you're looking for free anti-virus, you can get AVG or avast. If you're looking for paid anti-virus, nod32 is the best. You don't have to get a separate network card since every motherboard has 1 or 2 ethernet ports. |

Minimal benefits for overclocking and something you can do yourself IF you feel you need to. Tweaking the OS is something you can do yourself as well or if you feel really deficient you could look around online for stuff.

GPU OC is not needed, as 2 x 275 will give you what you need, extra power will not be noticed, but the heat from it will be noticed.
OS tweak is not needed, with these beasts, OS tweak will yield nothing you will notice either. ram OC is something you will never know and will not make any noticeable difference. Edited by DST4ME - 09 Aug 2009 at 11:14pm |
