Okay AMD i belive is falling out of the races here. Intel's already outdoing all of Amd's processors out there with the i7. + from what i here the next gen of gaming consuls are going to be manly intel constructs the xbox 720 (dubbed name) is going  to have INtels Larrabbee inside and PS4 has accepted intels deal to design the GPU's the PS4 will use. Now all this is happening and i havent seen AMD's  answer for anything. Personally ive always been 100% intel but i know alot of AMD users out there and wondering what are you guys views

Intel has been trying to kill *****ously compete with AMD for as long as I can remember; well at least as far back the 8086 days anyway. Once Intel decided that they didn't need a second source for their parts any more, AMD was in their crosshairs. Still, all AMD needs is a cash infusion, few hot products and competent management and marketing and they would be right back in the fight.... Could happen.

Yeah but Intel has your MAJOR products coming out in the next 3 years on lock

PS4, Xbox 720, etc. thats where the major advertising comes in ppl are going to want to get there hands on Larabees after the 720 comes out its already been  a year + since i7s been out can AMD bounce that far up in 5 yrs? and if so there systems are gonna be skyrocketed to try and make up the cash difference

To me, this sounds somewhat similar to Apple before the iPod . . . or iPhone for that matter.

Well, Microsoft still dominates computers and I can't imagine that changing. Intel will probably always dominate as well.

Apple had Steve Jobs. AMD had Jerry Sanders for most of the last 25 years, and it doesn't seem that Jerry's replacement has fared any better.

Well if you look, they really cater to 2 different groups.

AMD is for the budget, bang for buck who doesn't OC.
Intel is for the fast, high-dollar gaming machine.

I don't think AMD will die anytime soon, and ya'll better be hoping they don't. If Intel gets a monopoly, they will start re-branding products and selling them for outrageous prices, because they have no reason not to.

Personally, I have always had better results with AMD. If my last PC didnt get a killer deal on an Intel processor I would have bought AMD. Every Intel processor I have had has fried even when the heat doesnt come close to maximum for the processor.

I prefer AMD for reliability vs. a little extra performance.

From everything I've read...this seems to be the consensus (and I would have agreed).  Then, just this morning...I read:  "AMD gained on Intel in the first quarter.  Intel garnered a 77.3 percent unit market share, a loss of 4.7 percent, while AMD had a 22.3 percent share, a gain of 4.6 percent.  AMD gained in the mobile and desktop PC markets", IDC said.  Big%20smile

Overall, shipments were down, though the rate of decline may be slowing.  "The PC processor market continued to reflect significant decline in end demand for most of 1Q09," said Shane Rau, director of Semiconductors: Personal Computing research at IDC.  "However, some inventory replenishment by (PC makers) at the end of the quarter helped to slow the decline and bring the quarter in at a level only slightly worse than typical seasonal decline."

Unit shipments dropped 13 percent from the first quarter of 2008 to the first quarter of 2009.

Well I think that AMD is going to pull ahead for a while. Think about it, there is a depression, and people are going to bargain buy.

Plus I just heard a killer for Intel.
The only Intel series that supports VT is the i7, whereas all of AMD's, minus the Semprons, support it. What does this mean? Well the virtual XP in Win7 requires it. So I'm thinking until Intel makes a cheap i7 or fixes the others, AMD is going to make massive bounds.

Oops!  Computer chip maker Intel has been fined a record $1.45B by the European Commission for anti-competitive practices.  It dwarfs the 497m euro fine levied on Microsoft in 2004 for abusing its dominant market position.

The Commission found that between 2002 and 2007, Intel had paid manufactures and a retailer to favour its products.  The investigation followed a complaint by the worlds's second-biggest chipmaker Advanced Micro Devices (AMD).  The Commission said that Acer, Dell, HP, Lenovo and NEC had been given hidden rebates if they only used Intel chips.

"Sustained violation"  It also found that Media Saturn, which owns Europe's biggest consumer electronics retailer Media Markt, had been given money so that it would only sell computers containing Intel chips.  "Intel has harmed millions of European consumers by deliberately acting to keep competitors out of the market for computer chips for many years," said Competition Commissioner Neelie Kroes.  "Such a serious and sustained violation of the EU's antitrust rules cannot be tolerated."  Last year, Intel made 80.5% of the microprocessors in PCs, while AMD made 12% of them.  The Commission has also ordered Intel "to cease the illegal practices immediately to the extent that they are still ongoing".  Dead

that would be a one sided poll wiht Intel obviously beeing the winner, at my price range, AMD can't even give me something to work with, unless I want to spend a gazillion dollars on cooling

Point well taken.  It's good to see a healthy debate that gives DST4ME a run for his money.

this is not even up for debate, the facts clearly show i7 is better, the rest is a figment of people's imagination.

PH II dies in Q4 2009, i7 can be upgraded to a new CPU if you like next year. i7 OCes better and then kills amd in performance. case closed.

you want to spend $250 on a cpu that will die in 2 month go ahead

others want to spend $250 on a CPU that oced 25% better and is the new technology and can be upgraded next year, and performs better.

About the Virtualization comment... My Q6600 supports it just fine. I love this processor and probably won't upgrade it for 2-3 years. I can overclock it from stock 2.4 to 3.2 with the temperature on load and idle only going up 4-6 degrees.

DST4ME, Question. You keep commenting about 'dieing PII, and upgrading i7' like you can't upgrade a PII.... ?

And what about those that don't OC. Because that seems to be the basis of most of your arguments.

My preference for AMD is based on the poor performance and unreliability of the Intels I have used. I have never had an issue with AMD processors and I have had a problem with every Intel I have ever had. My point being, in my personal use AMD wins by a landslide. Intel can't make a reliable product for what I do (which certainly isnt pushing the CPU to the max) so I do not buy Intel

Ive been on both sides of this, I started Intel back in '97 and went straight to AMD.  Better prices (until the FX series), and for me better performance.  now i switched from a X2 6400+ to a i7, all i have to do is pop in a PII and it'll do it fine (Crosshair II)

In reality there are two arguements here: who is better? and who is affordable?
now that I have money, I go Intel.  When i don't I go AMD.

Paper: "OMG, WTF, Scissors!"

I see, so what you're saying is that you go both ways... interesting.  BtC can identify with that.

Hey, leave me out of this pissing contest. Besides, it's better to go both ways, than only one way like you, "Mom".

But now, since you've asked, I worked for Intel for 10 years. I'd rather count on my various "appendages" than use an AMD based computer. Being able to count to 21 (well 20 in your case Ed) is good enough for most tasks.
