My current computer.. is a ASUS P5Q Pro with a Q6600 and 8GB RAM with w7.

I have gone through swapping many parts but I was curious if someone had seen this particular symptom.

I can play many games for a 'random' (1minute to 5 hours) and the machine will sleep the displays. It appears to goto sleep but the machine is still on. Power still spinning drives, light still on MB, KB still lit with NUMLOCK (but not responsive), it appears the machine is on and working but it doesn't respond to pings so I know the OS at the very least is hosed. I have to power reset the machine and then it comes up fine.

If I do not play the games, the machine is solid and stable for weeks at a time.

I have it happen on a consistant basis with Dragon Age and Bad Company Beta lately. I used to have it happen with LOTRO but that stopped and I can play that for hours. It has gone on through winter/summer .. hot/cold.. I have so far swapped out parts and had it still happen. Swapped out MB/VIDEO/PSU/MEMORY/OS RELOAD/DRIVES in RAID0 and RAID1.

There doesn't seem to be any link to when it happens or what causes it.

Anyone have any ideas?

What are your temps like when you game?  Especially right before the crash? (as recently before the crash as you manage to see)

Something quite similar happened to my old computer specs:

C2D e6600
7950gx2
Win XP sp2
4gb ram

I had the exact symptoms you had, about 10% of the time I could CAD to the task manager, doing this some times made an annoying repetitive beep until I let go.  Have you done anything like this?  Other times the music would loop playing the same note over and over and over again, sometimes the screen would just go black and nothing else would happen.

Sometimes my computer would also reset the resolution to the lowest possible resolution after a hard restart, has that ever happened to you?

The problem went away when I replaced my video card with a 260gtx.

I monitored and I don't remember what they were like, but it's winter/summer hot/cold.. the temps don't go up any more when it crashes than when it doesn't.. there isn't a spike or anything that would make sense. I ran in window mode with a temp displayed at all times and sometimes it's just seconds after getting in the game, sometimes it would go for a day without doing it. I don't /think/ it's heat related as there was no common temp that would cause it. I don't have the numbers off hand but they didn't spike for sure or seem high at the time.

Yes I have had those happen to me, I have RMA's this 9600 and it happened with the new one, I also for a while put a lesser card in to see if it would happen and it also happened with this card and previous and temp card.

By the way the P5Q MB is the second one, I had another ASUS board that I RMA'd before I used this mb that it happened on. I have borrow a PSU from a friend and that didn't help so effectively the only part of my computer hardware that wasn't swapped out at some point is the CPU and Case. I have even used a totally different HD with a clean W7 load.

It's puzzeling for sure!

I don't really have a ton of exp troubleshooting hardware but I would still lean towards a faulty video card or video driers if your resolution is resetting and you're able to sometimes able to CAD back to desktop.

My computer blanks out on me a lot. One thing to try, when it happens again, try to see if any of the lock buttons respond. I.e. num lock, caps lock, scroll lock. If none of them respond, your OS froze. If they do, somethings up with that game.

I've a 9600 GT, unfortunately what I think has the rare and most annoying black screen glitch. My screen would go black, any playing audio would loop, and no locks responded. After numerous happenings, I have come to the verified conclusion that it's a bad video driver. Unfortunately, I've gone through clearing old drivers and reinstalling all the new ones, etc. Blegh.

I wish it was so simple.. the video card I have.. i swapped out for an ATI something for a few weeks.. while the 9600 was RMA'd and they sent me a new card. During the time with the ATI it still happened.. Since I got back the new 9600 it went on a new W7 load (format and everything) with the latest drivers from nVidia downloaded. I can't see.. that through 3 different video cards and two different W7 loads it would be video card or driver but stranger things have happened I suppose.

As for NUMLOCK .. yes it's gone, no response. CAD doesn't respond either, its like it's gone into sleep mode but it's dead with power on.
