I just got the DS "Power and Value" system a few days ago and the top fan of the HAF932 case was not working, and realized that the fan power cable was not connected to the MB.  However, when I tried to connect it to the 2 remaining free fan power connectors in the MSI X58M motherboard, I realized that I cannot connect it there because those fan connectors are covered by the video card.

DS is sending me a 4pin-to-3pin power adapter so that i can power the fan from a free 4pin power connector.  I just want to know whether this is how it is done from anybody out there who has this system, or is it connected to the MB somehow?

If you have a "Power and Value" pre-built system and if you can inspect your system and let me know how and where the top fan power cable is connected, I would really appreciate it!

if you have none available on the board then yes then the 4-pin  Molex connector to 3 pin is your only option. other than maybe a fan controler

You could also take the card out ( the one that is over the SYS FAN on the motherboard )  in your case sys_fan 1 and sys_fan 3

and look to see if the card sits far enough off the board . You still might be able to connect it. As long as the card does not sit directly on the wires and or pinch them.

I am assuming that your sys_fan 2 is used

Yes, my sys_fan 2 is used for the back case fan.

I did try to take the graphics card out and connect the fan to sys_fan_1 and sys_fan_3 pin, but then when I plug back in the graphics card, it sits right on top of the fan wires and does pinch them as you mentioned. So, thats not a good thing.

I guess 4-pin-molex-to-3-pin adapter is my only choice.  I just wanted to confirm it with someone who has bought a "power and value" system recently, to see if that was what DS did in their system.

I really wonder why MSI in the X58M board, put the 2 fan pins (sys_fan_1 and sys_fan_3) right in-line with the graphics card because they should know that nowadays, graphics cards are really long and that it will definitely cover over the 2 fan pin connectors!

relman,
I ordered the Power and Value system last Thursday. I expect my system to ship tomorrow or the next day.  When it arrives I will take some pictures of the inside to show you what they did in mine.  I sent DS a message last night with a link to this thread and asked them to make sure this problem is taken care of before my system ships, so maybe they will do something different in mine, I dont know.  Thanks for pointing out this problem on here.  Have you had any other issues with the system yet?

biggmac101,

Thanks!  Let me know what they did on yours.

The only other issue I had was the primary video output from the graphics card did not work properly when I first switched on the system.  Moved the video cable to the secondary video output and that worked.  Contacted DS and they said its probably a faulty video card and they sent me a replacement gtx 285 card.  I just got it today and plugged in the new card and it worked.  The primary video output is ok now and everything looks fine.  It must have been a faulty card.

So that was the only other issue I had with the system and other than that, everything else works beautifully.

Sure relman, I hope I can help you out when I get my system.

So your system came with an unplugged fan and a faulty video card out of the box huh?  Thats a bummer.  From what I have been reading DS seems to be great with customer service, so hopefully you had a good experience with them while working through these problems.  It does make me a little anxious to see if everything is alright when my system comes out of the box.  I am not very good with the inner workings of computers so it will be stressful for me if I have to try to install a fan power cord or put in a replacement video card.  Just out of curiosity, what indication did you have that the primary video output was not working...does that mean that you could not get any display at all?  Anyways I am glad to hear that your system is running fine now.  Hope you are enjoying it!

biggmac101,
Yes, when I first powered on the system after hooking up the monitor/keyboard etc., I did not get any display from the monitor, it was still in stand-by.  Checked all connections and re-tried it a couple of times, ...still no video.  Then I moved the video cable to the secondary DVI output and that worked.  Checked the display settings in windows and nvidia control panels and there wasn't anything unusual there.  Thats when I contacted DS and they said they will ship me another video card.

And dealing with DS customer service and tech support was very good ... they replied my emails within a day and I got a live person to talk to when I called, so that part went smoothly.

The system is working fine now.  Actually, the HAF 932 case makes it really easy to replace cards/drives and stuff with its tool-less design.

Hope everything works out well when your system arrives.

Relman

Got the system today.  No problems with the top fan...they ran the cord down the back where all the others wires are and connected it through the hole near the video card.  I couldn't get a pic of the cord actually being connected because I was too nervous to take out the vid card, but hopfully these pics help.

You can see the fan cord is the red white and black one running diagonally from top right to lower left.
Here it is coming back through the other side.

biggmac101,

Thanks a lot for the pics!!  Really appreciate it!

I can see how they did it. They have used sys_fan1/3 for the top fan and also for another fan, probably the front.

Using these pins was my initial concern because I thought the fan wires would be too close to the video card, but if DS thinks its ok to use them, then its ok i guess Cool

I have mine connected to the 4pin-molex-to-3pin adapter they sent me, so I think I'll just keep it that way.

Thanks again for the pics biggmac101.  I'm guessing everything went smoothly with the system out of the box.   Enjoy your system!

One more thing, on a differerent note though,  ...do you play WOW ??   If you do, what kind of frame rate are you getting with the gtx 285 card you have ?   Just curious.

hey relman

I loaded up WoW yesterday...was getting around 60 fps the whole time but that was during non-peak hours...I only have a 15 inch monitor so my resilution was pretty low though..so that probably makes a difference compared to if you had a decent monitor.

Thanks biggmac101.   I'm getting 60 fps most of the time too, with all gauges maxed out and at 1920x1080 resolution on a 24" monitor.
