As I wait for my DS machine to get here, I'm pondering how I'm going to arrange my desk, etc., as this machine will be way bigger than my current one, and won't fit in my current slot in my desk. Right now, it looks like it will go on the floor next to my desk. I'm wondering with intake and exhaust issues, dirt, dust, etc., how much a CPU stand would help. I have pretty standard carpeting in my house.
How are other people placing their rigs, especially if you have the Extreme case? |

I have this case and it sits on a stained concrete floor under my built in. I wouldn't recommend the carpet because of carpet fibers and fan intakes. The nice thing about the neon lights is you can see the dust as it forms. I clean my rig out once a week and have no issues. Yes, it does get dust, but keeping it clean regularly is the key.
The case is a monster and consumes more floor space than my old rig, but all in all it fits fine under my desk. I also don't have a desk port that it goes into so it's not confined to a closed box to breathe in. My rig does produce heat and keeps my legs warm. I have to open my French doors on my office to the courtyard outside so I can let the heat vent out at times. I like it when it's cold outside, then I can open the doors and watch my core temps drop to 32C to 39C. If I leave the doors closed, the core temps run on average around 44C to 45C in a warm environment. This GTX card runs warm! I can't imagine two in SLI without liquid cooling. I would be reluctant to set my rig on the carpet because of the issue I've described. Those small fiber particles can have all your tiny parts in your rig gunked up pretty quick. |

My monster rig with Extream case is also too large to fit into my desk's CPU space and is sitting on the floor beside my desk. I have wood floors in my house so the carpet thing is not an issue. I can tell you that this thing pukes out heat like a wood stove! My small den (approx. 12 feet x 15 feet) will warm up several degrees hotter than the rest of my hours after an hour of two of high end gaming. Luckily, I have liquid cooling on the CPU so it stays chilly.
I would suggest getting a solid surface to place this on so it is not sitting on and sinking down into the carpet. I have had my rig for about a mouth now and I can already see dust starting to form on the grates for the two giant top fans sucking in air for the Thermoelectric cooling.
I am going to clean it up tomorrow on my day off, but it is amazing how fast dust starts to form. If you have carpet, its going to be a lot worse.

I have my system on an old backgammon table. The table sits up about 3 ft. high and has a glass top. So it gets good air circulation on all sides and the top and bottom. Dust isn't an issue, nor is heat seeing as I live in Alaska. My DS bad boy does put out some heat, but not as much as I figured it would.
I only use the DS system for games. I have my old Dell as a e-mail, web surf, et. use, and have both hooked up to 1 monitor and utilize a KVM switch. Work good and less of a chance for something to get on the DS from the web.

If you go to home depot or something, you can get just a "shelf" (finished piece of wood) thats what I have under mine and it looks and works fine.

My Extreme case also sit on a concrete floor in a room in the basement. The concrete floor will help keep your machine cool but you need to vacumn the floor frequently to minimize the amount of dust. I don't think it's a good idea to put it on carpet since you will have more dust build-up and it will restricts the airflow to the case. You can get a piece of wood just like ed1371 said and put it over the carpet and let the case sit on it. You can practically get wood in any size if you go to a hardware store like Menards, Lowe's....

Thanks for the replies. I'm going to go get a piece of wood, and go that route I think.
