OK,

I've searched the forums and found appaerently conflicting results for DSO's shipping policy to APO addresses. Several customers have said that they paid a ton extra for international Fed-Ex shipping to off-post addresses. Other posts say that DSO has an option to ship to APO...those same users said that DSO highly discouraged using the normal USPS system, and based on my experience with miltary mail, I'd say that they're probably right.

I'd really rather not have to pay an extra $500 for shipping (and I don't have an off-post address anyway, or know offhand anyone who does that I'd trust to recieve this package), but of course I'll be heart-broken if my system arrives in poor condition. Someone mentioned a wooden crate they paid extra for...could I maybe pay for the crate and just use the regular USPS insured shipping?

Does anyone have any helpful advice or cautionary anecdotes about shipping desktops? I'm ready to order, but I'll be stressing for weeks if I can't get the shipping situation fully sorted out beforehand.

I leave in Japan and have a APO address.  Here is my take. DSO said that I needed a crate, so I totally agreed and thought that was the end.  But then they said that the military doesnt take crates as shipping boxes and that you (I ) will need to use another way if you wanted to use a crate.  So my options are.  To use a crate with Fed Ex international (and pay about $700 for both shipping the crate) or ship the computer with regular box through the military system and HOPE that my computer makes it.  Plus I was told that there wouldnt be any warrenty on the computer that was shipped via regular shipping box.  You might want to ask about that again.

So really.... if your spending (I dont know how much you are) on a computer, wouldnt you want it to have the best shipping possible?  Just read or ask people here on their stories with the USPS?  your will be surprised.  SO I say save up... I've been saving for over a year and yes, Ill be shipping mine with Fed Ex international.

So where are you at anyways?  Overseas, stateside?

We would like to request all international orders shipped via a Crate, but, I do have to say, if you are shipping it to an APO, if you use the USPS (Postal Service) they are fairly good with not damaging packages. I assume they don't go through such a belt system like UPS/Fed Ex. Plus, the box is put on a crate with other packages.

If it is not going via Postal Service, you should get a crate because it would go through Fed Ex/UPS.

Also, the Postal Office does not like the 850Si or 950Si cases due to the sheer size of the box.

I hope that clears it up.

Regards,
Alex

Well, I have been checking frequently, but due to the huge time difference between the U.S. and Afghanistan, I'm ususally checking when all reasonable people who didn't foolishly sign their life over to Uncle Sam are in bed =P

Anyway, I ordered last night. Ticket number 161065 if anyone wants to check it out. I just need to confirm that I am who my credit card says I am, since my billing adress is my home of record and I want the system shipped to my APO box in Italy, where I'm stationed until next year, and where I'll be returning to from OEF VIII hopefully sooner rather than later this summer.

Alex, a question about shipping...will the USPS and APO addresses not take crates? I'm fine with the USPS handling a box (though it is for an 850Si case...do they have significan problems due to the size?), it's the military postal system between the stateside APO distribution center and the final destination that worries me. Can a crate still be shipped APO through USPS?

Yes, I'm spending a lot for the computer itself, of course I want to protect my investment, but $700 for international FedEx is outrageous if APO is at all a viable option.

The Post Office will not accept the Crate. Since you selected the 850Si, it will be a tight squeeze to let the Post Office accept the large box.

Also, thank you for purchasing from us. We are gratefull for all the service men buying from Digital Storm.

Alex

I had my system sent to me in Iraq via USPS without any problem what so ever. It was just the normal DS shiiping box not the crate so dont worry it will be fine.  I have bought tons of stuff and had it sent to my APO in Germany and nock on wood not one single problem due to the postal system or military (now people poorly packaging it is another story) Mine wasnt the 850si case though it was a 750si but when I sent it back to Germany it was in a pelican case that was somewhat bigger without a problem so you should be ok there also.

Thank you Thomas, it's always reassuring to hear exactly what one wants to, lol.

Brian, I dont quite know what to say to you...are you being sarcastic or what? Of course I want to treat my computer right, but $700 for international shipping isn't inconesequential to anyone I know, even despite "all that tax free money". Further, do you have any idea what I make? It's not a lot, certainly not in light of the fact that I risk my life for a questionable cause. Do you know anything about me, i.e. what other financial responsibilities might be? I doubt it. Maybe you should consider what offense you might cause before trolling a friendly customer forum.
