In the process of building Apollo with concerns about reliability of water coolers.

Can the 6700k take the Air cooling option stage 1 with overclocking, or is it better to roll the dice with the h100i gtx cooler and keep a spare on hand for that day in the future.

Noise is not an issue for I game with headphones :)

build 1524556

thanks-

That question has been asked a lot lately.   Without knowing exactly what stage 1 air they use, we can't say for sure. If it's still the Hyper 212 EVO, as in the past, then it can handle a moderate oc.

Couple of suggestions with your build....change the HDD to the Western Digital Black.   More reliable and longer warranty.

Change the 750 psu to the other for additional $34. Gold vs Bronze efficiency, longer warranty and fully modular wiring.

Just know, 6700k's are hitting 4.7-4.8ghz on average with overclocks. I know you're only after stage one, but I guess the question is why? If you can get another half a ghz out of your cpu with stability for 24/7 use, why not?

I'm a fan of the Corsair AIO's personally. But I would worry about upgrading to the H100i or any variant of it if you're only going to be pushing like 4.2-4.3ghz. As bprat said, it's kind of difficult. There are only a select few air coolers I'd trust to keep my cpu cool if I'm planning on applying more voltage to it.

I'd get some form of an AIO if I were you, otherwise try to opt for a higher end air cooler. But that's just my opinion.

2 yr reveiw of H115i Corsair-

after two yrs of use on a 17 7700 k- the pump is starting to give me some hiccups. I think air / particulates are floating around the loop. Once in a while my temps start to climb aggressively (Pump RPM is good 3050-3100). I shut down, tap the Pump, shake the rig, reboot and all is good for a week or so. Rinse wash and repeat. When it works- it is a champ. idle 27c load 70c (running at stock speeds for now)

I have a Noctua 15-dhs sitting next to me for that inevitable day when this fails.

In a year and a half I've been back around here, this is the first review I've seen of an AIO cooler. Thanks for the input.

The Corsair AOIs come with a 5 year warranty from Corsair if you're interested.

Just my experience so far:
I will Warranty this when it fails and it will become my backup. I will going back to air (noctua d15s). Im spending too much time deducing what could be occurring. DS does such a good job at cable management in their rigs that replacing will be a bit of a PITA (that's a compliment to you guys). I wish I could see inside the tubes to figure out what was going on
My OCD has me always monitoring temps. Call me crazy but Every change in fan speed pitch I check Temps.
>some days: Runs like a dream. 24 idle- 60 stressed- water temp 33
>Some days: Heat creeps: 50 idle - 80 stressed Water Temp 38c and climbing ( I shut down and shake rig tap pump and all is good again).
> If I restart multiple times- heat climbs (bubbles caused by cavitation?)

seems like blockages are occurring for the RPM of the pump is reported as 300-3150rpm always( in performance mode). I just don't know what particles could be floating around.
