So I am getting Vista on my new PC. Wondering what apps is everyone using for:
1) Disc burning
2) Video/Audio playback
3) DVD playback
4) Antivirus/Firewall/Antispyware

If you install the Klite mega codec pack it will provide codecs and players that are needed to encode or play media files like quicktime, realmedia, dvd and many other video/audio formats. |

These are just some of the software that I have installed on my system...
Winamp
iTunes
Nero 8
I also do not have a virus scanner installed. I every once in awhile pop onto trendmicros site and do their online virus scan, but I guess I just don't feel the need to have a virus scanner on my system.

I'm going to predict the future for you Sara, one of these days, either you or somebody is gonna visit a site or download something that is not good and then you will quickly lose your feeling of not needing an AV ;)
does house even scan for root-kits? I'm gonna say no. also Trend micro does not have the best anti spyware, which means that some spyware can go unnoticed by the TM scan. Edited by DST4ME - 11 Aug 2008 at 5:09pm |

Well, no one is allowed on my system. In fact, my own partner isn't even allowed to use my system unless its under my supervision, and nothing is ever downloaded without my permission, otherwise they suffer the wrath.
As for me downloading. I download quite often, every day just about. I still feel very secure. I have an external drive that I use to store all of my important files, and its never connected to the system unless im copying data to it, or from it. So I really dont stand much to lose.

well if you don't have much to lose then there is nothing to protect, but remember rootkits will not be detected by TM

Oh, I know they wont. I'm really not too worried. Although I appreciate the concern. In all the years that I did actually have a virus scanner installed, I never once got a virus and my downloading then was even more careless then it was now.

Well correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't correct that you didn't get any-viruses cause you had an anti virus? nobody does more dangerous stuff then me, be it visiting sites that are full of viruses or downloading p2p stuff. but every-time I got something nasty my nod32 would either delete it before I even had a chance to run the .exe, or it would not allow to run nasty .exe, or it would not allow me to download it at all. Again if you got nothing to protect, then you don't need no protection I'm just doing my part in warning, can't tell you how many people I have seen get infected that thought they were OK. But again, you only need protection if you have something to protect, if you got no personal info/files on PC to protect or you don't do any online shopping/banking/paying bills, then you are OK |

All my online banking/bill paying/shopping is done on a laptop that is never connected to the internet, unless its for the three things mentioned above. Have to keep financial items seperate from fun and games.

well then make sure that laptop is fully secured with a proper up to date anti-virus and firewall. specially with the dns vulnerability now in days, you can visit amazon or any site and not realized your info if being recorded ;) shot you could be thinking you are on your bank's site and you won't be ;)

Ha, sorry david. That tends to happen alot when a discussion starts. Lets get back on track for david though.
What software does everyone else have installed? If I went through a list of all the applications I actually had installed, it would be quite long.

Sara, I don't think you are familiar with the new dns vulnerability. your address will be the same but the server you will be on, will not be your banks ;). this is nothing you can work around. you bank can pay you money if you can get it out of them but your identity will be stolen for ever as for my apps: here is my "true Launch Bar" Edited by DST4ME - 11 Aug 2008 at 6:41pm |
