Thank you in advance for all your help. Bottom line, I have been limping along on a Dell P4 2.8 since 2003 and now it is time to upgrade. I have one goal for this computer: To play ArmA II by itself and online with Project Reality Mod.

I have $1,500 to spend and need all components including the monitor, keyboard and sound. I will only be on the internet and playing games with this. Nothing else. My expectations are that I can run the game on relatively high settings with good FPS that will not slow me down versus others. I don't expect to be maxxed out, but I don't want to be disappointed after spedning the money for a new rig for the game and it's slow and choppy.

Special Needs: not sure where to begin I have been out of the picture for so long. My biggest fear is buying the wrong thing and pinning myself into a corner based on my hardware. I would like something that can be upgraded over time, i.e. the GPU now versus buying a new one next christmas or something like that.

ArmA II Spec recommended:
-Intel core i5 or AMD Phenom X4 or faster
-Geforce GTX 260 or ATI HD 5770 or faster with shader model 3 and 896mg VRAM
-RAM: 2GB
OS: win 7
DVD- Dual Layer compatible

Honestly It's only a little more than what your asking budget is, but I think you'll enjoy it a lot more. But Keep in mind you said you don't wanted to be disappointed.
I took that as you want a complete night and day difference between your old pc and this new one that you'll probably keep for years and be satisfied to your hearts needy.
Your config is not bad at all. but with this config i set up, you won't need or feel for an upgrade for quite a bit of time. Just my opinion though
Here is the config I set up for you. let me know what you think

Don't tweak the OS
OC your video card is up to you, but I'd just leave it alone.
I perfer the 6870 vs 5770 , They're basically the same. 6870 is slightly better and uses more power but it's only 14 bucks more than the 5770 I believe, so why not ?

thank you so much for the feedback. I will go with the 6870. Is the shader included on this card? Same with the dual layer drive? Are these standard at this level. I don't see them mentioned on the hardware specs so figured it was included.

thank you so much for your reply
