Hi folks! Another new DS prospect here. I've been poking around the forum the last few days learning what I can. I have a possible configuration I'd like your perspective on. I'll put that in the next post. For now, a bit of background --
With Portal 2, The Old Republic and who knows what else coming, I want good gaming performance, but I'm not a hardcore gamer by any stretch, so top-of-the-line gear would be sadly under-used. I did splurge last year and picked up a 30" XHD3000 for its multitude of connection options (and it's gorgeous, too), so I have the option of going way up there on resolution, but probably won't. Proposed budget is $2.5K - $3K. I've had my current PC for several years. I'd like this one to last for a while, too (a relative thing in this industry, to be sure), so I'm definitely conflicted. A single 5870 should be more than sufficient for anything I'm likely to run in the near term, and a 750w ps is fine for that. Plus I like its heat and power consumption numbers more than the 480. But the power supply is one of those things I don't want to have to upgrade, and 750w is dicey (if not impossible) for dual 5870s, so the only option down the road would be replacing the 5870 with the newest whizbang single card in a couple of years. I could upscale the power supply to keep my options open, but I saw one of Sarah's posts that said the 1000w is the only rating where she recommends the Corsair over the DS model. Cost-wise, I think there was only a $10 difference in the 1000w Corsair and the 1200w DS, so I went with the 1200w, even though it's major overkill for a single 5870 now. I'm trying to create a solid platform that will last, though. I think the rest of the config is pretty solid. A few questions in addition to the config review:

Section9, welcome to the forums!
Yes to receiving Windows 7 media.
Don't know on the 932 filters. I am sure someone who has the case will be along shortly to answer that one.
I believe you can request DS to replace the red led with a color of your choice. Check with DS to make sure though.
Since you don't plan on playing your games at max settings the 5870 should be fine. Down the road if you do want to play everything at max and at 2560x1600, add another 5870. If you think you may need 32 bit, change to win7 pro which has xp mode. The 1200W psu will give you room for growth. Hope this helps, and someone else will be along shortly to cover things I may have missed.

I've seen other similar air-cooled configs split between the Noctua stage 1 (dual 120mm) and stage 2 (D14). Some posts said the difference is only 1-3 degrees. Is it worth the extra $55 to spring for the stage 2?

your second one is looking pretty good
i do not believe the bigger noctua is worth it. im using the u12p and i got to 4.23 ghz on it, you really start to peak with air unless you start modding your case a lot and it will come out to more than just an extra 50 for the next highest cooler
unless you dont mind a little noise and you really want to push the bleeding edge with overclocking (above dso's free overclock) then it is not worth it
im curious why you would want to remove the front led fan and then add in red cathodes??
but either way you can get plenty of good 140mm fans so if you want one without leds then it wont be an issue

Thanks for the response -- seems like almost everyone is away for the holiday and sale time is running out....
I was only interested in swapping out the front fan when I was considering green lighting -- I understand the front fan for the 932 automatically comes with a red LED. I'd seen info that the only replacement would be a 200mm fan instead of the default 230, and I didn't want to lose that 230mm fan. Heck, I may try a green cathode anyway; those pictures of the blue-and-red system weren't bad. The cathode's only $10. If I don't like it, I keep it turned off. It comes with a switch hard-wired to the rear of the case, right? |

Glad to get your opinions, DST4ME.
I've seen very little discussion of the memory boost (which is actually just a memory fan, correct?). I see you've recommended that a couple of times recently. Any idea why more people aren't choosing that? And how much does it add to the noise, since by necessity it uses smaller fans (likely higher RPMs)? As for the NH-D14, I suppose the $55 savings isn't worth a life-shortened CPU (I did say I want the thing to last a while). That thing is huge, though -- it isn't going to interfere with other parts like the memory fan, is it? Thanks again! |

You know what, I think the D14 might get in the way of the ram fan.
the ram fan is nice to have but not a necessity, I have one and its not loud at all, 90% of your noise will come from the gpu's fan. IMO the D14 is worth it, I rather have the D14 and no ram fan if it came down to that. memory boos is actually ocing the memory, which is not the best idea for everyday use, that option is only available in the blackops section, in this case yes we are only choosing the ram fan only. |

I'm inclined to take your advice on the D14. You ought to know, given your experience level and that behemoth of a system you run.
![]() If I may ask -- you use that for folding, right? People usually do that as an afterthought, something else they can do with their machine. You built that entire rig around it, though -- is there a story behind that? |

not really, I'm more of a power user, so I wanted something that can fold on 4 gpus and cpu and let me do my many other tasks with no problems.
My Terminator can do all that and easily do many there tasks, which is exactly what I wanted. Edited by DST4ME - 05 Jul 2010 at 7:22am |

Pull the trigger Section9!
That's my system and it's awesome! 2 things:
1) The noctua 14 covers the first ram bank
2) The on-board sound is great, so far I haven't needed an add-in sound card. |

i thought i wouldnt care about onboard sound until i came down from the xfi extreme gamer card to my gigabyte onboard sound
it wasnt bad by any means, but overall power, punch, and SNR made me get the xfi out of my old case, i guess you dont know what youre missing until you get it sometimes
no debate that the noctua 14 is good, but like i said, unless you go over DSO's overclock it will be a negligible difference
i believe that possibly the 932 front fan LED has a button that allows you to turn the light on and off, so you could have both, like in my sig s9 :)
and you can see all 3 color combos in by build log, haha

The trigger's been pulled. I got it in before the sale expired late last night. I wanted that warranty upgrade.
I did keep the sound card, and dropped the memory fan. As I recall the memory fan is a clip-on, so could be added later if there was room. (I expect the builders would have notified me about a fit problem during build, anyway.) It's nice to put that back-and-forth agonizing over config details behind me and move on. I know I've got a solid build for today, plus room to grow tomorrow. Thanks to all for your advice. So now it's the waiting game, but at least I can keep learning things from the forum in the interim. |

It Has Arrived!
Quick question -- I posted a question in the support area a little while ago, but no response yet. I'd love to fire this baby up, though, so I'll ask here too. (once I'm up and running I can switch over to the Reviews section.) About hooking up the 932 side fan -- I can't locate a suitable cable from inside the system to hook it up to, like in the unpacking video (don't know what motherboard and PSU that was, though, compared to mine). The only thin cable similar to my fan cable is another female connection -- no external pins on the fan cable or the interior one, so no connection possible. Am I supposed to plug the side fan cable directly into the motherboard in the "JCHA_FAN" section? It looks like it would work, but I've never seen this mentioned in the videos or the forum posts. Just want to make sure I do this right. Anybody else with a 932 and EVGA X58 LE SLI care to chime in? |

Hey Section9,
I know how badly you want to get that beast working so here's what I have. Keep in mind same motherboard, HAF X case. When I unpacked my rig, the side door/fan was not connected yet but there was a fan cable dangling from between the expansion bays. Like between the 2nd and 3rd bays from the bottom. Maybe it slipped back in the expansion bays when shipped?
I pulled the side cover off to see where it is connected- it *looks* like it's just a fan adapter wire connected to a standard PSU power connector. Just two wires, black and red, did not see a white one as well like the fans connected directly to the motherboard. It's really tough to see since digital storm does a great job with cable management so everything is zip-tied together. Best I can do!
Good Luck~

Thanks for trying, Webmax. It's so frustrating to finally have the
thing arrive (later than expected), then not be able to run it.
Yeah, I know I could fire it up with that one fan unplugged, but I
chose the 932 for the airflow, and that fan is a big part of it.The fan cable is 3-wire (black/red/white) into a white plastic block. The thin cable coming directly out of the side of the PSU is a 2-wire (black and white, no red center wire) into a brown plastic block and apparently not connected to anything (don't even know if it should be). The only fan-cable-ish wire I see on the entire right side behind the HDD cages seems to already be going to the front fan, so that's not it. I just don't see anything else it could be. The mobo pin block is labeled as a fan connection, just like several others, so I'm pretty sure that's going to be it, but it's already 1 am here so I'm going to throw in the towel for the night. It's not like I'd have much time to play with it tonight anyway. *sigh*

No problem Section9, I feel your frustration,
Yes, my side fan does have red, black and white wires but it's connected to only a two wire, red and black connector which, in turn, looks like it's just an adapter feeding off 4-pin (the standard IDE power connects) power connecter from the PSU. I do have other fans that are connected directly to the motherboard including one that is connected to the JCHA_fan located on the bottom, middle section of the motherboard.
I believe it was done this way for length. I can remove the side door and have plenty of room to disconnect the fan instead of barely enough play if it's connected directly to the motherboard.
Being a new day looks like a great time to call Digital Storm!
Keep patient, you'll get there! Edited by Webmax - 29 Jul 2010 at 2:14pm |
