Comments on this card? I'm looking to purchase a single GTX 580. Would this be a good choice. I understand it takes up 1.5, actually 2 slots. Are the base specs the same with all the Nvidia boards (580)? How would this compare to the EVGA board? It would seem the Asus will run cooler and clock higher based on the design changes for cooling and power made by Asus. Looking for opinions on the 580 boards. Now need to discuss the value performance trade off with some of the other boards. Thanks

Thanks Justin, whats your take on the card? Seems to cost the same as any of the reference boards. I would be swapping out two GTX 285's for it. My thoughts are I would get DX 11 as well as better performance, especially in the games that do not take advantage of SLI. Maybe a little better graphics tossed in for good measure. I'll be moving this box into the playroom and order another DS rig within 6-8 months. Please, feel free to put forth other options.
Thanks again
Chuck

since 2 cards take up 6 slots, do you have room? and do you have PCIe slots that will work? Yes 2 GTX 580's will be a lot more powerful than dual 285's, a lot. lol
So, if you have the correct PCIe layout, sure they seem to be good cards, but not really any better than the reference ones.

Sorry, let me clarify ... going with one 580 board, that is unless I were to get an EVGA 580, then I could add one down the road. Really for this system at this point in time I was thinking a single card solutiuon. Thats not to say I would not swap out MB and CPU down the road as the system will still be in use, just in more of a backup roll. We have kids, and although they use mostly laptops, Xbox. The desktop would still see service as it is more then able to run games and such. So back to this ASUS Card ...... or? |

Just read your post again, I could just go with a reference board. Just thought since the ASUS was the same price .... I do know that 2 580's would be a LOT faster then the 2x 285's, but would I see a boost in performance with one 580 in games that would otherwise utilize SLI? Since so many titles really only use one card any way the the spread between 1x 285 and 1x580 should be substantial.

All games can use SLI, and most of the new ones I have seen, utilize SLI very well. As long as you don't have a bottleneck in your system. I, myself always go with reference cards, just because of the ease of modding them, and swapping BIOS, etc. Some non reference cards have also been just total crap, like any non reference 5870, just junk. some non reference cards are fine, but it makes most sense to me to get a reference GPU. |
