Well I guess I need to cancel my DS order, since I wont be needing my new streaming p0rn machine :P

Seriously I get why the providers want to do stuff like this, but it really sucks when so many people are just starting to be encouraged by content providers to stream everything.  Look at Netflix trying to eliminate its mailer business in favor of a total streamming business model, this sort of move by AT&T and im sure the rest of the providers will follow suit soon enough, is really going to mess with streaming video and audio.

you can get unlimited bandwidth, but it's gonna cost ya. i hear Verizon phones may put a cap on streaming b/c of the new Iphone that's here, only time will tell if company's will follow suit.

as of right now, i have time Warner turbo, and there's no limit, but i wouldn't be surprised if they put one on soon.

Heres the thing though, both the wife and i play alot of mmo's and do alot of direct to drive downloading with netflix as our entertainment. Give me a week, i would be so far over the 250g it would be unbelievable. Could this be the death of online gaming?

Wireless caps I get, because of the nature of the infastructure.

I to wont be surprised if warner, comcast, etc etc put caps on their wired bandwidths soon, since ATT is doing it.

.
MMO's really dont really use that much bandwidth at all, except for patches.  Gameplay itself isnt send any video, just vectors.  Hell that ventrillo/TS you are using to talk to your fellow players is most likely using more bandwidth than your MMO is.

As to things like netflix, yeah you are going to be screwed.  It will be interesting to see since this annoucement came out from ATT and surely soon to follow other providers, if the host of content such as Netflix, Itunes, Amazon, Hulu are going to cause enough of a stink.

Then again this could all be a ploy to work around some of the net neutrality issues, since if you read the fine print ATT's bandwidth cap wont count its U-Verse TV signal, even though it is coming down the same pipe.

I just got off the phone with ATT.  They deny it and say they have been receiving calls all day from pissed off people like me.  We shall see.

First they kill off unlimited data on smartphones. Now they cap off bandwidth to their network service. Do they WANT to deny the internet technology boom? >.>

DSP reports has been pretty good in the past about "leaking" things that proved to be true.

My thing is, with netflix, and everything available online, such as direct downloads for games. Which i know friends that download any game they can get. And with alot of people replacing cable with hulu and netflix and google tv (as well as other net tv's), how will this impact the sales and market of the 3 items ive mentioned

if anyone is wondering they updated the article with a statement from att just like what they said with smartphones "less than 2 percent will be affected"

I don't get it, wired bandwith costs absolutely nothing compared to wireless so wireless caps thats ok since its relatively new tech and expensive for the provider but wired, thats just stupid. I mean we all could have 1gbps inernet like in hong kong and it wouldn't even cost much after initally... its all so stupid schemes to make the companies get more money when they are already making a ton. They are almost doing this to prevent us from getting rid of cable because now its possible they don't want us to since cable is their main source of revenue.

I agree with you guys, but, honestly, we don't really use that much bandwith anyways on a daily basis. Unless we download things all day.... or serve files to mass loads of people daily.

But downloading games thats about 15gb per game you can only download roughly 10 games in a month and honestly when I make my new computer i'm downloading like 15 since i haven't been able to play any recent ones in forever.

But it all comes down to the fact that they are doing this to force us not to watch tv online because if you have att's tv they give you a extra 100gb free. like seriously? what the hell.

But a fyi for anyone looking into att internet their "6mbps plan" is 2mbps if your lucky and a upload of .1mbps and i can only imagine what their "12mbps plan is" and also for gaming it sucks i can't get on servers with a ping lower than 100 or it times out...
But i'm switching to comcast soon so thats good :)

I  assume you mean DSL and not U-Verse.  A lot of this depends on the copper in your house and other things.  My house being older has really nice fat copper in the house, so even though I pay for the 1.5mbps plan I actually get 2.4mbps, w/ 0.5 up, and my latency to just about any server in the USA is almost always below 50ms.  Then again even from my neighborhod to where my connection, to switch to teir 3 backbone is under 3 miles of cable/fiber and I am sure that really helps.

I cant abide cable modems because you share your bandwidth withever other tom dick and harry on your line, so you will see your bandwidth peak speeds drop off during peak usage times.

it says that u-verse subscribers (att's tv thing) get 100gb more bandwidth. and with comcasts cable modems at least your upload for 12mbps is 2mbps and at worst probably 6mbps download and 1ish mbps upload which is a hell of a lot better than what i have now its just there are so many hidden fees. and comcast is just overpriced on its own.

I wish that was true, it was easy to do this in Hong Kong because it is such a small land mass that it was easy to lay the bandwidth for this.  They reach roughly 2 million households or about 90% of all households in HK.  HK is roughly 400 sq.miles, which is smaller than the CITY(not county) of Los Angeles.

Now this sort of gigabit network is exactly what goggle is trying to get started right now, and was asking for cities and towns to submit proposals to be included in the test study.  Although they estimate it will cost $5,000 per household to do.

p.s. and of course my city submitted, we are all just waiting for the "winner" to be annouced.

Indeed they all suck, it is just a matter of choosing the lessor of evils for your location.
