Topic: ATI 5770/5770 OR 5770/5870 ?Posted: 14 Feb 2010 at 9:32am |

Due to monetary constraints I had my DS rig built with one overclocked ATI 5770 graphics card. So far, most of my games (circa 2005-2007) run fine with decent frame rates.(50-60 fps) However, as income permits, I will be upgrading to more recent games and am already thinking about future upgrades.
I understand that any of the ATI cards within the same series(4000,5000) can be installed in crossfire. I originally planned to install another 5770 but then considered saving alittle longer and getting a 5870 to install in crossfire.
Has anyone tried this? Is there some comparison info on the two configurations?(benchmarking, in game comparisons). I know most of the posters here will probably advise to save even longer for two 5870's but I don't consider that a viable option( I'm way cheap)....lol..... So the choices are 2x5770 OR 5770/5870 in crossfire.
Basically, I'm trying to determine if the extra money for the 5870 is worth it OR is the difference gained between crossfire 5770's as opposed to 5770/5870 in crossfire too small? ALSO are there problems with the 5770/5870( configuring, overclocking, stability, etc.) combination that could be avoided by going with 5770/5770 ?
Any thoughts or information would be appreciated........JPT Edited by jaypeetee44 - 14 Feb 2010 at 9:42am |

I'm not even sure you can do those two cards together but even if you could when crossfire is enabled the lower specs will be used for both cards. So If you bought a 5870 it would perform like a 5770. After some searching some people are debating whether 1 5870 is better than 2 5770's in crossfire.
Here's the link to some info from ATI. I'm sure some of the more knowledgeable forum people will chime in and help you out. http://ati.amd.com/technology/crossfire/faq.html -Leon |

Thanks for the reply and the link you provided does indeed state the cards will perform at the lower data rates as you surmised.
Since there's no point in paying for a 5870 that performs like a 5770, I guess I'll go with another overclocked 5770 for my crossfire expansion. Now all I need to do is find the comparisons of 2x5770 vs 1x5870 and 3x5770 vs 2x 5870... and also where it lands in the Nvidia range comparatively.
Once again, thanks for the reply.........JPT

I would run the 5770, try overclocking it a lot more if you want to try your hand at it. If you do get to the point that you need more power, yes you can get another 5770, but I really advise against multiple cards. The 5770 might keep you satisfied longer than you expect, 1-2 years, especially if you are able to tweak it a bit. lol
When it is finally too weak to run the games you want, you can sell the card and get a single card that is much more powerful, and be a lot further ahead.
Remember there is a lot of issues with running multiple cards, with overall minimal gain. The min FPS is usually not much more with two cards, and you have more noise, more energy draw, more heat, microstuttering, double the chance of GPU failure.

one solution cards is always best but by that I don't mean internal cf or sli cards like the 5970 or 295, I mean like the 5870 or 5850 or 285/275.
2 x 5770 should match the performance of a 5850, 5870 should be able to out perform it. |

Thanks guys for the input....ALL good points. If indeed I'm satisfied with the performance with the 5770 for the next two years, then a single card upgrade is probably the easiest (no psu upgrade) and definitely the least expensive way to go. AND in 2 years maybe even the Fermi will be affordable !............JPT

yep, that makes the most sense, and will put you further ahead with less$.
It is true that 2 5770's will match a 5850 in max FPS, but who cares, it is the MIN that is important, and that is where a single card shines, and you don't want to know what microstutter is.
